Critical Care Nurses (ICU/CCU) deliver essential care to patients who are acutely and critically ill, operating in a highly technical and continuously monitored setting. These patients face life-threatening conditions with diverse needs, necessitating comprehensive medication protocols and therapeutic interventions. CCU/ICU Nurses also bear the significant responsibility for the emotional and psychosocial well-being of the patient, their families, and significant others. Given the requirement for 24/7 care, work hours will encompass days, nights, weekends, and holidays. The patient-to-nurse ratio per shift may vary depending on the facility and specialty involved. Nurses engage in considerable physical activity, including walking, bending, stretching, and standing, and assist in patient transfers. They may encounter risks associated with exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases, and treat patients who may exhibit confusion, agitation, or uncooperative behavior.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Current licensure in good standing in the state of practice (or Compact License)
  • Evidence of 1 year of CCU/ICU nursing experience within the past two years
  • BLS and ACLS certification required

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care strategies
  • Prepares, administers, and documents prescribed medications, reporting any adverse reactions in accordance with established policies
  • Provides fundamental bedside care
  • Initiates patient education plans as directed by the physician, instructing patients and their families on managing their health conditions, including post-treatment care, nutrition, exercise, medication self-administration, and rehabilitation
  • Records patients' medical histories and vital signs
  • Interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests to assess the patient's condition
  • Collects samples for laboratory analysis, orders necessary lab work, and evaluates lab reports
  • Prepares equipment and assists the physician during patient examinations and treatments
  • Responds to life-threatening situations in accordance with nursing standards and protocols
  • Accurately documents all care information in a timely manner, using the appropriate formats and forms
  • Applies Hemodynamic, Phlebotomy, and IV protocols
  • Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, interpreting and recording electronic displays, such as intracranial pressures, central venous pressures, pulmonary artery pressures, and cardiac rhythms from monitoring devices
  • Ensures proper placement and functioning of catheters, leads, and tubing
  • Initiates corrective actions whenever monitoring/life support equipment indicates adverse symptoms
