Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Animal Care Specialist to join our team at MD Anderson Cancer Center. As a key member of our Veterinary Medicine and Surgery department, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional animal care and support to our research programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Routine Animal Care and Specialized Procedures
    • Perform daily animal care and health flagging for assigned areas, including those requiring specialized training.
    • Ensure the ventilated cage rack system and automated drinking water system are operating correctly.
    • Perform specialized procedures such as placing special diets in cages and ensuring special water is placed properly.
    • Perform routine rodent weanings and separations.
  • Facility and Room Care
    • Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of animal housing and ancillary areas.
    • Ensure equipment is cleaned and made available for sanitization on the established schedule.
    • Report problems to team leaders or supervisors.
    • Ensure supplies are adequately stocked.
  • Documentation
    • Record data in the appropriate hardcopy or electronic system.
    • Ensure that data is entered in a timely manner.
    • Record the completion of assigned tasks using the electronic task management system.
    • Ensure that the correct animal identification is placed on animals.
    • Report any discrepancies to team leaders or supervisors.
    • Complete all written documentation in clear and legible writing.
    Requirements
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Three years of animal care experience in an animal hospital/clinic, research facility, or related field, including one year in specialized housing and/or technical procedures.
    • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) within 180 days of eligibility.
