About the Role:
The Head Coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the baseball program, including recruitment, game preparation, and supervision of assistant coaches. This is a key leadership position that requires a strong understanding of the sport, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with students, staff, and alumni.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administer the baseball program in accordance with Savannah State University, University System of Georgia (USG), National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), and Southern Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SIAC) requirements.
- Demonstrate sportsmanship and the highest level of personal integrity.
- Prepare and organize daily practice sessions and game preparation for competition.
- Organize and administer the recruiting of prospective student-athletes in accordance with the NCAA, Conference, and Savannah State University policies and procedures.
- Coordinate with academic services to promote and monitor the academic development, progress, and graduation of student-athletes.
- Conduct the sport program so that each student-athlete is an integral part of the student body and their experience in athletics enhances their educational experience.
- Conduct the baseball program by always promoting an atmosphere of compliance with all NCAA, SIAC, institutional, and federal rules and regulations.
- Recommend and prepare the scheduling of all contests under the guidelines provided by budget, program scope, and all applicable departmental guidelines, rules, and regulations.
- Report all known or suspected violations of NCAA or SIAC regulations to the Compliance Office or the Athletic Director.
- Tracks records such as, but not limited to, recruitment files, eligibility records, emergency data cards, and any records that support eligibility, academic progress, matriculation, and transfer to ensure that such records are compliant.
- Manage, supervise, and evaluate staff positions related to game management and student workers.
- Exhibit dedication to the SSU community and students.
- Work collaboratively within the university to plan, organize, implement, and follow up on extensive on-going recruiting effort through written, verbal, and personal contact with student athletes and their families.
- Represent the University during fundraising and other civic events.
- Must be dedicated to students holistically, including their academic success and health and wellness.
- Promotes the baseball program to the general public.
- Sponsor or obtain sponsorship to participate in and conduct baseball camps/clinics.
- Participate with team and staff during community service programs.
- Manage and communicate with the coaching staff as well as maintaining a positive collaboration with support staff.
- Continually evaluate each individual student athlete's needs and short/long term goals.
- Assist in coordinating and overseeing campus visits by prospective athletes.
- Establish and execute a successful fundraising plan for the program and execute fundraising projects when appropriate.
- Demonstrate a commitment to working with student-athletes toward academic success.
- Create an environment that places value on student athletes and staff safety, mental health, and overall wellbeing.
- May be required to perform job-related duties other than those specifically delineated in this position.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Two (2) to five (5) years of progressive and successful coaching experience, at the collegiate level or exceptional equivalent (ex. Professional, post-secondary, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five (5) years of progressive and successful coaching experience at the collegiate level.
- Master's degree from an accredited institution.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge, application, and compliance of NCAA, Conference, and University rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of the University, USG, the Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of baseball coaching methods.
- Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
- Ability to effectively manage baseball coaches/staff.
- Ability to hire, supervise, and develop staff.
- Ability to recruit, develop, retain, and graduate student-athletes.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Ability to raise funds and promote the baseball program regionally and nationally.
- Ability to work effectively with all baseball student-athletes.
- Skill in decision making and problem solving.
- Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and functions.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle highly sensitive and personal information with sound judgment, tact, and discretion.
