The Nurse Labor and Delivery Specialist is responsible for providing comprehensive care to women during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. This role involves assessing and monitoring the health of pregnant women at various stages of labor, including gathering health histories, vital signs, and physical assessments.

  1. Pre-Labor and Admission Assessment:
    • Assess and monitor fetal and maternal well-being through non-stress tests (NSTs), fetal heart tones, and uterine activity.
    • Educate patients on labor and delivery processes, pain management options, and what to expect during childbirth.
  2. Labor Support and Monitoring:
    • Monitor labor progress through regular assessment of contraction patterns, cervical dilation, fetal heart rate, and maternal vital signs.
    • Administer medications as prescribed, including epidurals, Pitocin, and pain relief options, while monitoring their effects.
    • Provide continuous emotional support and pain management throughout labor, utilizing comfort measures such as positioning, breathing techniques, and encouragement.
    • Assist with amniotomy and other procedures as directed by the healthcare team.
  3. Assisting with Delivery:
    • Assist obstetricians or midwives during vaginal deliveries, providing instrumentation assistance, suctioning, and other necessary actions during birth.
    • Participate in cesarean section procedures by maintaining the sterile field, assisting with delivery, and providing initial newborn care after birth.
    • Perform neonatal resuscitation and initial assessment of the newborn's health immediately after delivery.
  4. Postpartum Care:
    • Monitor the health and recovery of both the mother and the newborn in the immediate postpartum period, assessing vital signs, bleeding, and uterine tone.

An estimated annual salary for this position is approximately $150,000, based on 36 hours per week and 52 weeks per year.
