CHIEF MEDICAL AFFAIRS OFFICER
Position Overview
The Chief Medical Affairs Officer (CMAO) plays a pivotal role as a senior physician within the hospital and is an integral member of the executive leadership team. This position provides strategic direction and guidance in areas such as quality assurance, case management, clinical research, and healthcare information technology.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Strategy: As a senior management team member, the CMAO is responsible for formulating and implementing strategic initiatives that align with both local and organizational objectives. This includes overseeing the medical staff office, credentialing processes, medical education, electronic health records, and clinical research activities.
Physician Executive Leadership: Foster strong partnerships with elected medical staff leaders to establish expectations and standards. Act as a vital resource for the medical staff, facilitating their development through organized meetings and forums. Represent physician interests in strategic planning and ensure accountability in the implementation of clinical informatics and IT systems.
Quality and Safety in Patient Care: Collaborate with medical staff and clinical leaders to enhance patient care quality and execute performance improvement strategies. Ensure adherence to national standards and corporate objectives related to quality, patient experience, and safety.
Committee Engagement: Serve as the accountable executive for the Institutional Review Board and actively participate in various committees, including those focused on clinical informatics, quality and patient safety, and credentialing. Build relationships within the community and with local medical specialists.
Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development through management education and maintain clinical relevance through continuing medical education. Advocate for program development and technology enhancements as needed.
Qualifications:
Postgraduate degree (M.D. or D.O.) with an active medical license. Board certification in a clinical specialty is required. A minimum of five years of clinical experience and two years in a leadership role is essential. Knowledge of accreditation standards and healthcare industry practices is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
An MBA or MHA is preferred.
