Job Overview

Position: ASL Interpreter

Compensation: $30-$32/hr.

Role Summary:

Turning Point Inc. is seeking a skilled ASL Interpreter to enhance our dedicated team. The ASL Interpreter, operating under general oversight, delivers sign language and oral interpreting services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are deaf and/or hard of hearing, as well as to hearing management and staff collaborating with these individuals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates scheduled assignments that involve interactive discussions for team meetings, behavior plans, guardianship discussions, and mandatory company training sessions between deaf and/or hard-of-hearing employees and hearing managers/staff, as directed by program leadership.
  • Responds to requests for interpreting training materials, behavior plans, guardianship or other legal documents across various environments, including residential programs, office settings, educational contexts, and medical appointments.
  • Applies expertise in ASL and professional interpreting methodologies, along with knowledge of deaf culture and specialized terminology, to clarify workplace and job-specific inquiries between deaf and/or hard of hearing individuals and hearing staff.
  • Participates in Human Resources interviews with deaf and/or hard of hearing applicants and assists with new employee onboarding paperwork.
  • Engages in workshops and conferences to enhance and maintain interpreting skills, staying informed on trends in the interpreting field through the study of specialized ASL vocabulary and related materials.
  • May provide ASL resource materials to employees as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in American Sign Language, interpreting, education, social work, or a related discipline.
  • Completion of an Interpreter Training program and a minimum of one year of relevant experience in interpreting for deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
  • Required certifications include Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification of Interpretation (CI) and Certificate of Transliteration (CT), with National Interpreter Certification (NIC) preferred. Advanced or Master certification from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Level 4 or Level 5 is a plus.
  • Proficient in American Sign Language and interpreting techniques across diverse communication environments.
  • Comprehensive understanding of deaf cultural values and prevalent issues in the field of deafness.
  • Awareness of current trends and developments in interpreting, as well as applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Willingness to attend workshops to enhance interpreting and transliterating skills.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license for travel to various locations.
  • Ability to pass background checks prior to employment and during tenure.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are essential.
  • Familiarity with Outlook and/or Google email.
