Reporting Structure
This position reports to the Research Department Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee research and development initiatives with cross-functional teams.
- Identify emerging technologies, formulate project proposals, and secure support from stakeholders.
- Evaluate new technologies for diverse applications including power supplies, grid-connected converters, UPS systems, EV chargers, and motor drives.
- Coordinate the preparation of project proposals for external funding opportunities.
- Establish technical specifications and innovate new designs.
- Supervise the design of electronic circuits and printed circuit boards.
- Oversee the development of firmware for both low and high-level functionalities of power converters.
- Manage relationships with key suppliers and stakeholders.
- Lead the creation and testing of simulation models and hardware prototypes.
- Facilitate the prototyping of test assemblies, conduct experiments, and document test results.
- Analyze test outcomes and generate comprehensive documentation.
- Contribute to the preparation of internal and external technical reports, presentations, and publications.
- Draft invention disclosures and provide technical insights for patent applications.
- Represent ABB at professional conferences, industry groups, and other relevant events.
- Engage in strategic planning initiatives.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Electronics, or a Master’s degree with significant experience in the field.
- Proven ability to learn swiftly, collaborate in international teams, and lead projects effectively.
- Experience in drafting proposals and securing funding for research initiatives.
- Strong communication skills, with a track record of presenting results and networking.
- Hands-on experience in designing and prototyping electrical circuits, collaborating with PCB manufacturers.
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, probes, and power supplies.
- Proficient in writing firmware for DSPs, MCUs, and FPGAs using languages such as C, C++, and Verilog.
- Experience in PCB design.
- Willingness to travel up to 15% of the time.
- Must possess valid work authorization to be employed by ABB in the US.
