This recruitment is for candidates interested in joining our esteemed law enforcement academy.
The Springfield Police Department is on the lookout for dedicated individuals eager to contribute positively to the community in Southwest Missouri. Our department prides itself on having a comprehensive training program, a variety of specialized units, and an exceptional benefits package.
We seek individuals who are committed to serving the community and uphold the principles of constitutional, community-oriented policing.
As a Police Recruit, you will undergo rigorous training at the Academy, equipping you for the role of Police Officer. Upon successful completion of the Academy, you will begin your career in patrol, addressing both emergency and non-emergency calls, while ensuring the safety of the public and fellow officers. You will actively engage in community policing, traffic enforcement, and occasionally, special assignments. Our department is recognized as one of the leading agencies in Missouri for specialized roles and opportunities for advancement.
During the 6-month paid Police Academy, as a Police Recruit, you will acquire skills to:
- Comprehend and enforce laws to provide exceptional service and assist in our mission to reduce crime.
- Employ modern policing techniques to address community issues while treating individuals with fairness and respect.
- Maintain accountability for yourself and others, fostering public trust and confidence.
- Communicate effectively with community members through active listening and empathy.

Applicants must successfully navigate the following steps in the hiring process to be considered for the position of Police Recruit and enter our Police Academy:

Testing
To assist with travel expenses incurred during entry testing, travel vouchers are available.

Qualifications and Requirements
Experience, Education, and Training
Police Recruit
- Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
- 30 semester credit hours from an accredited institution;
- Class A POST certified peace officer or currently enrolled in a Class A POST program with successful completion of the POST exam within six months;
- Two (2) years of active military service with an honorable discharge;
- Four (4) years of honorable service in the National Guard or armed forces reserves;
- Three (3) years of successful business ownership and management within the last five (5) years;
- Three (3) years of full-time employment as a correctional or detention officer within the last five (5) years;
- Three (3) years of full-time employment as a licensed professional security contractor within the last five (5) years;
- Three (3) years of full-time employment in the professional trade industry within the last five (5) years;
- Three (3) years of full-time experience providing paraprofessional services to the public in fields such as social services, healthcare, or education;
- Two (2) years of experience as a Police Service Representative;
- Two (2) years of experience as a Traffic Services Officer;
- Two (2) years of experience as a 911 dispatcher or telecommunicator.
- Prior law enforcement experience and/or education is preferred but not mandatory.
- U.S. Citizenship
- Minimum age of 21 at the time of commission
- Excellent physical fitness
- No felony convictions
- No domestic assault convictions
- No more than one DWI conviction; no DWI conviction in the past three years
- No more than two (2) moving violations from separate incidents within the past twelve months, or at fault in more than one (1) traffic accident in the past twelve (12) months
- Meet vision and hearing standards
- No objectionable tattoos; no tattoos on the head, face, or neck.
In addition to the requirements listed above, lateral candidates must meet the following:
- A MO POST Class A license (if the candidate does not possess a MO POST Class A license but has law enforcement certification from another state, they may participate in the testing process while seeking reciprocity through MO POST).
- A minimum of two (2) years of full-time sworn police experience in any state within the last five (5) years, including duties such as responding to calls for service, conducting investigations, responding to traffic incidents, and apprehending suspects.
