Thermal Hydraulics Engineer
The Nuclear Science and Engineering Division is in search of a dedicated thermal hydraulics engineer to contribute to the Research and Test Reactor Department. This role involves conducting thermal hydraulic evaluations for innovative reactor designs, assessing reactor feasibility, and transitioning existing research reactors to utilize new fuel sources. Additionally, the engineer will assist in the advancement of thermal hydraulics software tailored for reactor design and safety performance assessments of research reactors both domestically and internationally.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thermal hydraulic analyses to support regulatory licensing efforts, focusing on reactor performance and safety characteristics.
- Analyze experimental data, perform alternative simulations, and develop and validate software tools.
- Document findings and prepare comprehensive reports, presentations, and manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with colleagues at Argonne and partner institutions.
This position plays a crucial role in supporting our nonproliferation objectives and the scientific missions of research and test reactors worldwide, which include the production of isotopes for medical applications, providing neutron beams for scientific research, and irradiating materials for advanced reactor technologies.
Position Requirements:
- Strong understanding of nuclear engineering principles, theories, and practices related to reactor system design and analysis.
- Proficiency in fluid dynamics and heat transfer applications in nuclear systems and reactor safety evaluations.
- Experience with steady-state thermal design and performance analysis of engineering systems.
- Ability to conceptualize, design, and assess innovative solutions to complex quantitative challenges.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Capacity to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Commitment to embodying Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
- Compliance with U.S. citizenship requirements and successful completion of a background investigation and drug testing as mandated by federal regulations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in performing thermal hydraulic analyses, including reactor transient and accident assessments (e.g., using system codes like RELAP5 or TRACE).
- Proficiency in programming for scientific and engineering applications, with a preference for Fortran.
- Familiarity with scripting and task automation using modern tools, such as Python.
- Knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or structural mechanics and stress analysis using commercial finite element software (e.g., STAR-CCM+, COMSOL, ABAQUS).
Given the significance of thermal hydraulics across various engineering disciplines, candidates may have backgrounds in nuclear, mechanical, chemical engineering, or related fields. The selected individual will be assigned to the appropriate level (RD2 or RD3) based on their relevant knowledge, skills, and experience. The criteria for the desired levels are as follows:
- RD2 Level: Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of experience; Master's degree with 3+ years; Doctorate with no experience required, or equivalent.
- RD3 Level: Bachelor's degree with 8+ years of experience; Master's degree with 5+ years; Doctorate with 4+ years of experience, or equivalent.
