Coastal Engineer Job Description

Moffatt & Nichol is a leading global infrastructure advisor specializing in the planning and design of facilities that shape and serve our coastlines, harbors, and rivers. We are seeking a skilled Coastal Engineer to join our team in Seattle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare engineering designs for permitting and construction by collecting and studying reports, maps, drawings, aerial photographs, and met-ocean, hydrological characteristics, and related topographical and geologic data.
  • Create feasibility studies by analyzing engineering designs, conducting environmental impact studies, and assembling data.
  • Develop construction specifications, plans, construction costs, and schedules to produce engineering documents.
  • Research and assist in complying with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; and advising management on needed actions.
  • Support ongoing Coastal/Water practice through contacts and business development efforts working with State, Federal (US Army Corps of Engineers, NOAA), Local coastal governmental agencies, as well as private sector clients.
  • Implement scientific and regulatory tasks for projects to ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and policies, including NEPA, Endangered Species Act, and Clean Water Act.
  • Participate in and help lead meetings with clients, engineers, scientists, and regulatory agency staff to develop project designs and regulatory compliance documents.
  • Assist with stakeholder engagement including developing meeting agendas, presentations, and notes.
  • Participate in business development activities.
  • Assist with project and budget management.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering; required.
  • Master's degree in Civil, Coastal, or Ocean Engineering; preferred.
  • 6 to 10 years of experience; required.
  • Professional Engineer licensure in Washington or the ability to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months of hire; required.
  • Experience with environmental hazard resiliency for project planning, analysis, and design phases.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation).
  • Availability and willingness to travel.
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST.

Working Conditions:

The majority of work is office-based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.
