Position Overview

Academic Support Advisor
This role is funded through a grant and is a full-time position requiring 35 hours per week.


Role Summary:
SUNY Ulster County Community College is seeking an Academic Support Advisor to join our dedicated team. This position is essential in guiding students through their academic journey, particularly focusing on adult learners in career and workforce development programs.


The Academic Support Advisor will report directly to the Director of New Start and will be responsible for providing comprehensive counseling and advising services. This includes addressing complex issues related to student academic performance and overall well-being. The advisor will manage a diverse caseload, ensuring that students receive holistic support, mentorship, and access to community resources.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist students in accessing public benefits and navigating public assistance programs.
  • Connect students with state and community resources to address food, housing, and childcare needs.
  • Implement the EMPathways Mobility Mentoring advising model across the campus.
  • Design and deliver programming that informs students about available resources.
  • Conduct intake interviews and make appropriate referrals.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, as well as institutional policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and Title IV.
  • Utilize technology to enhance service delivery and data management.
  • Analyze data to improve practices and enhance the student experience.
  • Collaborate with various offices to ensure students have access to necessary support services.

Qualifications:
A Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of one year of relevant experience, or a Master's Degree in education, student development, social work, or a related field. A combination of education and experience that meets the competencies required for the role is also acceptable.


Essential Experience:

  • Experience with strategies to support first-generation, low-income, and at-risk students.
  • Proficiency in using technology for daily operations.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Experience:

  • Bilingual or multilingual capabilities.
  • Experience in academic advising and career planning.
  • Two years of experience in student affairs or case management.
  • Familiarity with educational technology platforms.
  • A proven history of assisting students in overcoming academic challenges.
