The first assistant practices under direct supervision of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase. The first assistant must have acquired the necessary knowledge, skills, and judgment specific to their level of clinical practice and does not function concurrently as a scrub nurse.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the surgeon and the healthcare team to ensure a safe and successful operation.
  • Practices under direct supervision of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase.
  • Acquires and maintains the necessary knowledge, skills, and judgment specific to their level of clinical practice.
  • May also perform duties of RN Circulator:
    • Plans, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates nursing care to patients whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities are potentially compromised during surgical or other invasive procedures.
    • May also perform in the Surgical Technician role.

Requirements:

  • Licensure/Certification/Registration:
    • Current unencumbered South Carolina or Multistate Compact Registered Nurse License.
    • BLS – Healthcare provider on hire (American Heart Association or American Red Cross).
    • Certificate of Completion of RNFA program.
    • After 2 years of practice, RNFA Certification is required.
  • Recent experience in Perioperative Nursing required.
  • Performs in accordance with delineated job responsibilities and satisfactorily completes a yearly evaluation based on these responsibilities.
  • Must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively meet the needs of the patient/internal & external customer.
