Job Summary

The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons at aquatic facilities. This role requires a strong understanding of lifeguarding techniques and the ability to respond to emergencies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Guard the pool or waterfront, maintaining appropriate zone coverage and adequate scanning.
  • Enforce facility rules to prevent aquatic emergencies.
  • Participate in regular training and in-service sessions to maintain proper knowledge and mastery of lifeguard skills.
  • Conduct or assist in swim testing procedures.
  • Perform daily opening and closing tasks and checklists.
  • Clean and organize the pool deck and equipment.
  • Maintain a clean facility and swimming area.
  • Perform rescues and work as part of the rescue team in case of aquatic emergencies.
  • Initiate and follow emergency procedures as outlined in the facility Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
  • Perform first aid and fill out appropriate paperwork.
  • Place and remove lane lines or swim area demarcations.
  • Conduct and properly document pool readings.
  • Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the District's safety program.
  • Assist in setting up and organizing the pool or beach office, and first aid locations.
  • Field and answer patron questions to the best of their ability.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, the individual should have a strong understanding of lifeguarding techniques and the ability to respond to emergencies. The ideal candidate will have a Red Cross First Aid Certificate, American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification, American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, American Red Cross AED, American Red Cross Oxygen Administration, and American Red Cross Waterpark Lifeguarding.

Work Schedule

The Lifeguard will work a variety of shifts, including mornings, daytime, evening, and weekends. The Park District of Highland Park is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
