Organizational Context and Reporting

This role is situated within the Audit Response and Boards of Inquiry Section, under the Office of the Under-Secretary-General, Department of Operational Support.

The Audit and Compliance Specialist will report directly to the Chief of the Audit Response Unit.


Key Responsibilities

The Audit and Compliance Specialist is tasked with the following primary duties:

  • Facilitating reviews conducted by United Nations oversight entities, including the Board of Auditors, Joint Inspection Unit, and Office of Internal Oversight Services, specifically concerning the Department of Operational Support (DOS).
  • Coordinating cross-entity evaluations of processes managed by DOS, such as the supply of strategic goods and services, including fuel, rations, and aviation solutions.
  • Providing briefings to United Nations oversight bodies regarding operations, services, transactions, and internal controls relevant to DOS.
  • Organizing entrance and exit conferences, as well as other pertinent meetings with oversight bodies.
  • Preparing comprehensive inputs for DOS responses to information requests and reports from oversight bodies, consolidating contributions from all DOS offices and service centers.
  • Defending and articulating complex positions during high-level discussions.
  • Assisting in the preparation of responses to legislative inquiries related to oversight reviews.
  • Researching contemporary review methodologies and advising DOS offices on oversight activities.
  • Compiling suggested review topics for the annual work plans of oversight bodies.
  • Notifying DOS offices of upcoming oversight assignments and coordinating annual surveys.
  • Preparing briefing materials and presentations for the Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support regarding oversight activities.

Demonstrates analytical skills and the ability to conduct independent research, identifying issues and formulating recommendations. Communication: Exhibits clarity in verbal and written communication, actively listens, and engages in two-way dialogue. Adapts communication style to suit various audiences and ensures transparency in information sharing.

Planning and Organizing: Establishes clear objectives aligned with strategic goals, prioritizes tasks effectively, and allocates resources judiciously. Anticipates risks and incorporates contingency plans into work processes.


Educational Background

Holds an advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in finance, business administration, or a recognized professional accountancy qualification. A first-level university degree combined with relevant experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.


Job-Specific Qualifications

An accounting qualification from a recognized international accounting body is desirable.


Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible auditing experience, including both national and international contexts, is required. Experience in peacekeeping operations with the United Nations or similar organizations is advantageous. Familiarity with Financial Regulations and Rules and financial systems within the United Nations or comparable entities is also desirable.


Language Proficiency

Fluency in English is essential, while knowledge of another official United Nations language is preferred.


Assessment Process
