Key Responsibilities- Pre-Certification and Pre-Authorization: Identify patients requiring pre-certification or pre-authorization and follow up on accounts as indicated by system flags.
- Insurance Verification: Contact insurance companies or employers to determine eligibility and benefits for requested services.
- Financial Resolution: Follow up with patients, insurance companies, or providers to resolve insurance coverage issues.
- EPIC System Utilization: Use work queues within the EPIC system for scheduling, transition of care, and billing edits.
- Medical Necessity Screening: Perform medical necessity screening as required by third-party payors.
- Documentation and Communication: Document referrals/authorization/certification numbers in the EPIC system and communicate with patients regarding anticipated self-pay portions, co-payments, deductibles, and account balances.
- Knowledge and Compliance: Maintain current knowledge of major payment provisions and regulations, and ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Education and Certification: High school graduate or equivalent.
- Skills and Abilities: Excellent oral and written communication skills, basic knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10 and CPT coding, third-party payors, and business math.
- Computer Skills: Minimum typing speed of 25 words per minute and ability to accurately utilize applicable computer software and equipment.
- Interpersonal Skills: Excellent customer service and telephone etiquette, with the ability to maintain confidentiality and approach interpersonal relations in a positive manner.
The Insurance Specialist will work in an outpatient clinical environment, with prolonged periods of sitting, extended periods on the telephone, and manual dexterity required to operate standard office equipment.
