Job Summary

This is a full-time position located in the Outpatient Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program (ADTP) administered by the Mental Health Service Line (MHSL) and located on the grounds of the Brockton campus of the VA Boston Healthcare System.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides a wide range of empirically supported individual and group-based psychotherapeutic interventions appropriately tailored to the individual needs of complex, multi-diagnosed patients.
  • Performs comprehensive diagnostic evaluations to guide treatment planning for patients referred for outpatient substance use treatment.
  • Develops clinical programming for the intensive outpatient program that is consistent with the needs of veterans with substance use disorders.
  • Creates treatment plans that are consistent with veterans' goals and abilities.
  • Consults with staff from other clinics and services, including residential treatment programs, acute inpatient psychiatric units, primary care, and other subspecialty mental health clinics.
  • Coordinates provision of additional individual and couples/family therapy for patients involved with I-ADAPT.
  • Coordinates referrals for I-ADAPT patients to appropriate treatment services offered through other VA and non-VA clinics.
  • Provides consultation and psycho-education to veteran's family members and social supports, as indicated.
  • Attends substance use treatment team meetings and serves as a consultant to other treatment providers.
  • Provides clinical supervision to psychology, psychiatry, and social work trainees, as requested.
  • Completes administrative functions, including report and progress note writing, and attending staff and organizational meetings.
  • Keeps informed regarding treatment and outcome research development in the areas of substance use and psychiatric disorders, psychosocial rehabilitation, and related fields.
  • Works to meet in compliance with local and national performance measures.
  • Answers clinic consults, and tracks clinic data for the purpose of program evaluation and quality improvement.
  • May also conduct additional direct care activities or participate in committees or work groups as needed/requested by Mental Health or Psychology leadership.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS. The basic requirements for employment as a VHA psychologist are prescribed by Public Law 96-151 codified in 38 U.S.C. § 7402. To qualify for appointment as a psychologist in VHA, all applicants must meet the following:

  • Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Education. (1) Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed.
  • Licensure. Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Grade Requirements

In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:

  • Staff Psychologist, GS-11 (Entry Level)
  • Staff Psychologist, GS-12 (Developmental Level)
  • Staff Psychologist, GS-13 (Full Performance, Level)
