MedStar Health is seeking a highly skilled Surgical Coordinator to join our team at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. The ideal candidate will be a clinically competent professional responsible for maintaining a smooth flow of operations in an assigned area by organizing resources, start-up activities, and workflow to ensure safety, quality, and operational goals are met daily.
Key Responsibilities- Monitor and maintain defined PAR levels to complete procedures in service line area of responsibility.
- Monitor product utilization and make recommendations on PAR adjustments based on usage patterns.
- Oversee turnovers and room readiness to ensure that defined metrics are met.
- Coordinate with vendors to ensure that all required equipment is available prior to scheduled case start.
- Report to supervisor changes in standards, supply or equipment needs.
- Audit work areas per standard operating procedure (SOP) to ensure each associate follows the procedural compliance to complete cases.
- Verify accuracy of procedure carts prior to beginning of each shift.
- Ensure departmental inspections are performed with appropriate records maintained.
- Establish and maintain effective and collegial working relationships with service line physicians.
- Remain up to date on emerging technologies and potential changes in service line.
- Provide new and/or temporary associates on-the-job training to learn the basic tasks (safety, quality, and productivity) for all positions within assigned line.
- Participate in start-up, continuous process improvement meetings (CPI's) and assist in problem resolution activities.
- Continually evaluate work process for improvements.
- Maximize the flow of communication for effective performance and communication within the department and between shifts.
- Follow all facility safety procedures in completion of job duties.
- Document all changes in service line needs and effectively communicate those changes in a timely manner to the individual in charge of making changes to pick sheets.
- Verify documentation accuracy to support accurate charge capture.
- Preference card maintenance, including day-to-day updates and meeting with surgeons once a month.
- Participating in system-wide preference card standardization and specialty service meetings.
- Assisting with surgeon onboarding by displaying our instrument sets.
- Assisting with scrubbing/circulating according to OR needs.
- Coordinating with Supply Chain and SPD.
- Participating in huddles.
- Associate degree from an accredited Surgical Tech Program or bachelor's degree in nursing.
- 1-2 years' experience as an RN, Certified Surgical Technologist, or RNFA/Surgical Assistant.
- Strong knowledge and recent clinical experience in General, Robotic, GYN, Ortho/Ortho Spine, Urology, Plastic, and Podiatric specialties.
- Strong knowledge of preference cards and their management.
- Familiarity with supplies and suppliers, as well as instruments and equipment used in the OR.
- Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland.
- Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant, or Certified Surgical Technologist, or Certified Surgical Assistant in the State of Maryland.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) within 90 days.
