As a Health Physicist, you will play a key part in communicating and addressing the technical aspects of radioactive waste management, radiological characterization, radiological control, and release of real and personal property and related activities with DOE personnel nationwide and DOE contractor technical experts.
Job SummaryWe are looking for a talented Health Physicist to establish and implement a complex and comprehensive Radiation Protection Program involving integration of a broad range of engineering and scientific disciplines at assigned sites/facilities. The successful candidate will provide authoritative advice to program and/or facility leadership on proposed new, or modifications to existing, complex nuclear and non-nuclear facilities to determine the degree of health physics and radiation safety hazards associated with operations and ensures the adequacy of controls.
Key Responsibilities- Establish and implement a Radiation Protection Program involving integration of a broad range of engineering and scientific disciplines at assigned sites/facilities
- Provide authoritative advice to program and/or facility leadership on proposed new, or modifications to existing, complex nuclear and non-nuclear facilities
- Interpret organizational radiation safety policy and guidance
- Review and/or evaluate contractor technical reports, statements, plans, assessments, etc., to assure compliance with Department of Energy (DOE) policies and standards
- Establishes and maintains continuing liaison and cooperative relationships with Federal agency management, Federal Executive Boards and Associations, and professional organizations to promote acceptance and understanding of laws, organization regulations, and industry and DOE standards and objectives
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National
- Must have a degree in a natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus
- Must have a combination of education and experience that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above
- Must have specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-11 in the Federal service
- Must have experience in assessing radiological training programs and radiation safety program performance for compliance with requirements
- Must have experience in providing technical assistance to organization personnel performing radiation protection and radiological health and safety activities
- Must have experience in drafting or updating standard operating procedures for radiation protection activities in accordance with policy, state and federal regulations, and international standards
