Job Title: Staff Attorney

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Staff Attorney to join our Eviction Defense Program. As a key member of our team, you will provide critical legal services to low-income individuals and families facing eviction and housing insecurity.

Job Summary

The Staff Attorney will be responsible for:

  • Providing direct legal services to clients, including advice, negotiation, and litigation
  • Offering holistic representation to clients with financial and other hardships that could result in loss of housing
  • Representing clients in city, town, and village courts across our region in eviction and warranty of habitability cases
  • Maintaining accurate records and statistics for grant reporting purposes
  • Effectively communicating with clients, colleagues, and community members
  • Preparing and filing legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and briefs
  • Independently managing a caseload and prioritizing tasks
  • Participating in outreach and education efforts to reach community members and advocates
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A law degree from an accredited law school
  • New York State Bar admission
  • Prior legal services, trial, and litigation experience preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving indigent community members
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and computerized legal research
  • Bilingual or multilingual a plus
