Key Responsibilities

  • Core Facility Administration:
    • Provide leadership and strategic vision to uphold best practices within the core facility, ensuring effective daily operations, data acquisition and analysis, data management, standard operating procedures (SOPs), training and education, quality assurance, lab safety, and staffing.
    • Assess and adapt core facility services in response to the evolving needs of Salk researchers, developing and implementing both short-term and long-term strategies.
    • Oversee financial operations, including monthly billing and the development and management of the core facility budget and recharge rates.
    • Collaborate with faculty sponsors and the executive director to ensure optimal reporting and communication with funding agencies.
  • Research Support:
    • Partner with Salk researchers to achieve their research objectives using state-of-the-art MS technology platforms, providing collaborative support for experimental design and selecting appropriate instrumentation.
    • Evaluate and integrate new techniques and technologies as the field advances, including organizing equipment demonstrations to introduce new tools and applications.
    • Prepare relevant technical reports and present core facility and research findings internally and externally.
    • Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals.
    • Establish and implement best practices for MS data retention, transfer, analysis, and storage.
  • Institutional Support:
    • Design and conduct teaching and training seminars and workshops relevant to current or potential research at the Institute.
    • Collaborate with the Salk Office of Technology Development to promote potential intellectual property and discoveries that may be viable candidates for patents or licensing.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned by management.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise multiple employees within the Mass Spectrometry core facility.
  • Execute supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving issues.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree with 7+ years of relevant experience or PhD with 4+ years of progressively complex experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Proficiency in mass spectrometry technologies, with both hands-on and theoretical knowledge of methods for proteomics, lipidomics, and metabolomics, including quantitative proteomics and metabolic flux studies.
  • Experience with data acquisition and MS analysis software across popular commercial and open-source platforms.
  • Additional skills required include experience with sample preparation techniques.

Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated salary range for this position is $115,000 to $166,000 annually. The Salk Institute provides salary ranges that reflect its good faith estimate of what the organization reasonably expects to pay for this role. The final pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on various factors, including the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's qualifications, department budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market compensation for similar roles.
