About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior RF Communications Engineer to join our team at Planet Labs PBC. As a key member of our engineering team, you will play a crucial role in designing and developing our next-generation onboard and ground radios and antenna systems.

Our team is responsible for pushing the frontiers of satellite communications, and we need an experienced engineer who can make evolutionary and revolutionary improvements in performance, reliability, and cost. You will be responsible for the architecture, design, and test of next-generation S-band through Ka-band radios and various antennas, as well as working with vendors on design projects.

You will also be responsible for PCB layout projects and interfacing with cross-functional teams - electrical, software, and mechanical engineers to address challenging design issues. Additionally, you will conduct environmental and EMC testing on communication subsystems and get them ready for flight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop RF/MW hardware transceivers and circuit designs up to 30GHz, including simulation (Spice, ADS), instrumentation, test, and characterization.
  • Develop RF/MW system designs, link budgets, and interference analysis.
  • Conduct EMI testing and mitigation.
  • Design, simulate, and test antennas using ADS and HFSS.
  • Apply digital communications theory and associated signal processing algorithms for both narrowband and wideband data transmission systems.
  • Work with Software Defined Radio (SDR) platforms and respective signal processing libraries (e.g., GNURadio).
  • Validate and verify radios and antennas pre-shipment and validate radio performance on orbit after satellite launch.
Requirements
  • BSEE is required, MS/PhD preferred.
  • 6+ years of experience designing and maturing RF & MW systems, transceivers, antennas, and/or SDRs to market.
  • Solid fundamentals in RF/MW, electromagnetics, and signal processing.
  • Proven track record of owning, designing, and critiquing RF/MW circuit designs, RF/MW layouts, component selection, and evaluation.
  • Extensive lab experience with RF/MW and mixed-signal board bring-up, characterization, and test using various RF, MW, Analog, and Digital test equipment.
  • Ability to adapt and learn a multitude of skills to develop complex systems, including active RF circuits, integrated transceivers, PLL synthesizers, mixers, switches, RF amplifiers, oscillators, detectors, filters, A/D and D/A converters, microprocessors, and FPGAs for space and ground station applications.
