Position Overview:

The HVAC Technician plays a crucial role within the Facilities Operations team.

With advanced skills and extensive experience, the HVAC Technician is tasked with the safe execution of a comprehensive range of HVAC responsibilities, including the inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of various HVAC systems.

The technician adheres to all safety protocols and established procedures at all times. Members of the HVAC Shop are represented by SEIU Local 175.

Key Responsibilities:


Efficiently and safely conducts a variety of journey-level installation, inspection, and repair tasks for commercial and institutional HVAC systems.

Diagnoses issues within HVAC systems, assesses potential solutions, and implements necessary repairs.

In critical situations, takes prompt action to mitigate problems and restore systems to optimal functioning.

Ensures the proper care and maintenance of vehicles, tools, and equipment essential for performing all duties.

Interprets and comprehends construction and equipment-related documents, including drawings, manuals, and procedures.

Collaborates with other trades personnel on complex projects.

Operates independently based on written and electronic work orders from a CMMS System, taking ownership of assigned tasks. Maintains accurate records of maintenance activities in an automated work order system.

Completes additional tasks as required, including overtime, after-hours work, special events, and emergency call-ins.

Adheres to the department's customer service standards.

Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Performs daily tasks safely and follows established safety practices.

Responds to after-hours and emergency call-ins as necessary.

Completes other assigned duties.

Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform essential duties satisfactorily. The following qualifications are essential:

- A minimum of three years of experience as a journey-level HVAC technician (beyond apprenticeship or equivalent training).


- High School diploma or GED, along with relevant education in HVAC installation, troubleshooting, and repair.


- Strong knowledge of steam and chilled water systems, with the ability to work on both high- and low-pressure steam systems.

- Comprehensive understanding of safe work practices.

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

- Commitment to upholding the department's customer service standards.

- Experience with various piping systems, including black and copper.

- Proficiency in interpreting drawings and service manuals for all serviced equipment.

- Solid understanding of air handling systems, hot water, and chilled water pumps.

- Computer literacy and the ability to navigate applicable campus software systems.

- Availability for after-hours and emergency callback work.


- Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with customers and colleagues at all organizational levels.

- Willingness to learn computer basics and work with the department's CMMS Software System.

- Ability to meet the physical requirements outlined below.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certifications in one or more of the following areas:

- Welding and Oxy-Acetylene torch operation

- EPA Universal Refrigerant License

- HVAC Certifications (ASHRAE or equivalent)

- Frequently lift or carry up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds;

- Lift up to 100 pounds to waist height and up to 35 pounds in various motions from floor to overhead;

- Frequently use hands for simple grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, or pulling (34 – 66% of the workday);

- Occasionally climb stairs or ladders, dig, use jackhammers or chipping tools, lie down, push or pull with forces up to 100 pounds (less than 33% of the workday);

- Frequently bend, squat, kneel, lift overhead, reach overhead, push or pull with forces up to 35 pounds (34 – 66% of the workday);

- Work outdoors in varying temperatures and environmental conditions;

- Ability to work at heights, maintain balance, and demonstrate full physical agility.
