Position Summary

The Heavy Vehicle Operator is tasked with the operation of trucks for the transportation of soil, aggregates, asphalt, and various materials to different job sites. Additionally, this role involves working in the yard to manage and stockpile materials as necessary. This position requires skilled operation of vehicles and equipment, performed under the guidance of a supervisor while maintaining a high level of safety and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operates trucks on public roads, in the yard, and at job sites to deliver materials, including but not limited to belly dumps, dump trucks, and semi-tractors with trailers.
  • Conducts daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, ensuring compliance with DOT regulations.
  • Monitors fluid levels, tires, lights, and other controls to ensure safe vehicle operation.
  • Attaches and detaches various types of trailers as required.
  • Maintains accurate delivery logs and completes necessary paperwork for billing purposes.
  • Loads and unloads materials and equipment as needed.
  • Monitors vehicle gauges during operation.
  • Keeps daily mileage logs updated.
  • Covers loads with tarps when necessary.
  • Ensures product quality to the best of the operator's ability.
  • Performs minor maintenance on equipment and reports major issues to the supervisor.
  • Adheres to all company policies and safety procedures, reporting any issues to management.
  • Follows all applicable laws and dispatch instructions.
  • Maintains a clean and organized vehicle.
  • Regular attendance at scheduled shifts is mandatory.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Two years of experience in tractor/trailer driving is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid CDL Class A or B.
Work Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must pass a DOT physical, drug screening, and background check.
  • Driving record must meet company and DOT standards.
  • Must adhere strictly to safety regulations as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor towards colleagues, supervisors, and the public.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively and assist others as needed.
  • Must maintain a current driver's license that complies with state requirements, including possible hazmat and tanker endorsements.
  • Willing to train less experienced drivers who hold a valid CDL A license.
  • Must be open to travel and working away from home when necessary.
  • Availability to work nights and weekends as required.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and MSHA regulations is mandatory.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Thorough knowledge of truck operations and related equipment.
  • Ability to operate vehicles safely under various conditions.
  • Basic mathematical skills for record-keeping and document interpretation.
  • Capability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to operate complex equipment requiring skill and independent judgment.
  • Familiarity with securing heavy and oversized loads.
  • Ability to interact professionally with customers and address any issues that arise.
Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this position include:
  • Climbing, bending, and frequent lifting of heavy objects.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and manipulate controls effectively.
  • Vision capabilities must include close, distance, and peripheral vision.
  • Must be able to enter and exit the truck multiple times throughout the day.
  • Ability to exert varying amounts of force to move objects as required.
Work Environment
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and various chemicals may occur.
  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and high places.
  • Noise levels may vary from moderate to loud.
