Description:

The Children's Respite Care Worker provides one-on-one support to children with serious emotional, behavioral, or psychological disorders, offering relief to families and caregivers. Services can be provided in home, community, and school settings.

Essential Position Responsibilities:
  1. Meet productivity and billing standards set by the department.
  2. Ensure accuracy and timeliness of reports, paperwork, mileage sheets, and electronic timesheets.
  3. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of service provision, including progress notes that individualize each note and reflect appropriate interventions and progress towards goals.
  4. Submit required progress notes and billing information in a timely manner as per agency requirements.
  5. Provide respite services to children and families at scheduled times, following the plan of care.
  6. Offer support and mentoring to children, teaching self-responsibility and goal achievement.
  7. Participate in community activities with children when possible and engage them in planned activities such as community service.
  8. Document and notify the program lead of emergency situations, concerns, or incidents.
  9. Participate in training sessions to learn how to assist children in daily-living activities, deal with symptoms of mental illness, handle emergency situations appropriately, and provide personal support to consumers.
  10. Provide support in crisis situations.
  11. Exhibit responsibility and accountability in providing service as scheduled and contacting parents, schools, and supervisors in case of absence or tardiness.
Requirements:
  1. Maintain an acceptable overall attendance record, including department staff meetings, agency meetings, and trainings as required. Ensure appropriate notification to supervisor for absences and ensure that work is covered. Be flexible in work schedule when needed.
  2. Exhibit an appropriate level of technical knowledge for the position.
  3. Produce the quantity of work necessary to meet job requirements.
  4. Work well with a team, keep others informed of information needed. Treat others with respect, maintaining a spirit of cooperation.
  5. Maintain effective and professional verbal and written interactions with peers, customers, supervisors, and other staff. Use diplomacy and tact in dealing with difficult situations or people. Demonstrate effective listening skills. Be receptive to constructive feedback.
  6. Demonstrate the ability and willingness to handle new assignments, changes in procedures, and business requirements. Identify what needs to be done and take appropriate action.
  7. Complete assigned work, meet deadlines without reminders or follow-up from supervisor or others.
  8. Perform work conscientiously with a high degree of accuracy.
  9. Meet goals and objectives as mutually agreed upon during the last performance review (if applicable).
Position Requirements:

The Children's Respite Worker is expected to have a high school diploma or equivalent. Prefer some post-high school education in a social service field or experience working with special populations. Must have strong organizational skills with attention to detail, along with effective communication skills both verbally and written, and the ability to develop and maintain rapport with consumers, constituents, and staff. In addition, the Children's Respite Worker is expected to be at least 21 years of age. A valid Kansas driver's license and access to a personal vehicle are required.

Physical Requirements:
  • Driving (for the purpose of community mobility)
  • Extensive writing/note taking, data entry
  • Lifting/carrying up to thirty (30) pounds
  • Bending/stooping/climbing stairs
