Job Title: Deputy General Counsel

The City of New York is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deputy General Counsel to join its Comptroller's Office. As a key member of the Office of General Counsel, the successful candidate will provide legal advice and support to the Comptroller and various bureaus, with a focus on construction law and contract disputes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise OGC attorneys handling complex construction claims and contract disputes
  • Advise and counsel BOE on a wide range of legal matters, including contract interpretation and administration
  • Investigate, evaluate, negotiate, monitor, and approve settlement recommendations for various non-tort claims and lawsuits against the City of New York and its agencies
  • Delegating monetary settlement authority to OGC attorneys and Law Department attorneys
  • Participate in and conduct complex settlement conferences and negotiations
  • Perform legal research and drafting memoranda on critical issues affecting ongoing litigation, negotiations, and procurement and construction-related policy
  • Oversee the management of the construction-related contract dispute resolution process
  • Represent the Comptroller's Office on engineering and construction-related matters
Requirements:
  • Admission to the New York State Bar
  • Eight (8) or more years of full-time relevant legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar, eighteen months of which must be in the supervision of other attorneys or paralegal teams
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar, eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys
