Highway Maintenance Specialist

Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding career in highway maintenance and construction? The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team as a Specialty Crew Operator.
Job Summary:This is a hourly position that is limited to 29 hours a week, 1500 hours in a 12-month period and is not entitled to state benefits package. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance.
Key Responsibilities:- Perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee
- Install, maintain, repair and remove roadway signs and traffic control devices for assigned area
- Operate and maintain light, medium and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair
- Perform general carpentry tasks
- Work in a fast-paced environment with a focus on safety and quality
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor
- Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations
- Ability to maintain records and complete simple paperwork
- Valid Driver's license
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
- Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety
- Inventory experience
- Basic tree cutting and chainsaw operator
- Experience in roadway sign installation, maintenance and repair
- CPR with AED, standard First aid, and blood borne pathogens (BBP) combined course
