Clinical Biochemical Geneticist Position

Chardon, Ohio, United States University Hospitals Full time
Position Overview

Institution: University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (UHCMC) & Case Western Reserve University (CWRU)

Location: Cleveland, Ohio

Employment Type: Full-time Physician

Specialization: Genetics

About the Role

University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (UHCMC) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) are in search of a dedicated medical biochemical genetics physician or physician/scientist. Both full-time and part-time candidates are encouraged to apply.

This role is designed to enhance the field of medical biochemical genetics and translational genetics and genomics within clinical practice at a prominent teaching affiliate of the CWRU School of Medicine.

The Center for Human Genetics (CHG) offers comprehensive clinical and metabolic genetic services across the University Hospitals system, catering to a diverse range of ages and conditions.

Clinical responsibilities can be tailored to align with the successful candidate's clinical and/or research interests, encompassing outpatient metabolism clinics and inpatient/emergency on-call duties for both pediatric and adult patients dealing with general genetic disorders and inborn errors of metabolism.

Currently, on-call responsibilities are shared among a group of eight geneticists, resulting in an average of 3-4 on-call days per month. Some remote backup call service is provided by medical biochemical geneticists who are not boarded in biochemical genetics.

Program Strengths

Our program boasts numerous strengths, including:

  • Clinical and research opportunities in general genetics, with eight board-certified clinical geneticists.
  • Expertise in biochemical genetics, featuring three board-certified biochemical geneticists.
  • Specialization in neurogenetics, with two board-certified neurogeneticists.
  • Focus areas in prenatal genetics, cancer genetics, and bioethics.

We are supported by a team of 11 genetic counselors, a metabolic dietician, and a full-time metabolic nurse, along with additional assistance from medical assistants and genetic counseling assistants.

The CHG is an integral part of the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences at the School of Medicine, which includes PhD researchers, providing ample opportunities for collaborative research.

Numerous teaching opportunities are available within our School of Medicine, including the clinical genetics residency program, medical biochemical genetics fellowship program, genetic counseling program, and various graduate school programs.

Our institution is a research site for the North American Mitochondrial Disease Consortium and the Urea Cycle Disorders Consortium, as well as several other industry-sponsored clinical trials and registries focusing on a wide array of metabolic disorders.

Support for clinical research initiatives is provided by two full-time research assistants, with plans to expand this team, along with a full-time regulatory specialist.

The successful candidate will have the flexibility to create an ideal balance within this position.

Primary Appointment: The successful candidate will hold an appointment (assistant, associate, or full professor) in the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences, with a hospital appointment in the CHG through UHCMC.

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to be exceptional collaborators, innovative in clinical care, and enthusiastic educators at both the graduate and post-graduate levels. Candidates should be prepared to contribute to service at local, regional, and national levels, depending on academic rank, and demonstrate consistent scholarly productivity.

Applicants must possess an MD, MD/PhD, or DO degree, board certification in clinical genetics and clinical or medical biochemical genetics (or active candidate status) by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics, and must be eligible for an active medical license in the state of Ohio.

University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University are committed to the principles of affirmative action and equal opportunity employment.
