The Asher House is a recognized non-profit sanctuary located in Salem, Oregon, dedicated to rescuing animals that have been abandoned or neglected. Our mission is to provide these animals with a nurturing environment filled with love and adventure. Founded by Lee Asher, who traveled extensively to advocate for dog adoption, The Asher House aims to create a haven where animals can feel cherished and secure. We strive to enhance the lives of both animals and people, one rescue at a time.

Role Summary:
The Sanctuary Wellness Veterinarian plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional medical care to the animals at The Asher House Sanctuary. Responsibilities include conducting health assessments, diagnosing and treating medical conditions, performing surgical procedures, and ensuring the overall health and welfare of both companion and farm animals. This position also involves collaboration with the animal care team, sanctuary management, and external partners to establish and implement medical protocols.

Additional Information:

  • The Asher House is in the early stages of developing an on-site veterinary clinic. The selected candidate will be expected to contribute innovative ideas and expertise in clinic design and construction, working alongside the Facilities Department to create efficient and compliant veterinary spaces.

Key Responsibilities:

Medical Care and Treatment:

  • Deliver both preventative and responsive care to companion animals.
  • Conduct thorough physical examinations on incoming animals to evaluate their health.
  • Diagnose and manage a range of medical issues, including infectious diseases and injuries.
  • Administer vaccinations and preventive treatments according to established guidelines.
  • Prescribe and manage medications, ensuring correct dosages and monitoring for side effects.
  • Be available for after-hours consultations regarding post-surgical complications or emergencies.
  • Maintain necessary licenses for controlled substances and facility operations.
  • Post-clinic establishment: Induce anesthesia and intubate patients, monitor vital signs, and ensure appropriate medication administration.
  • Oversee patient recovery from anesthesia and/or surgical procedures.
  • Provide euthanasia and necropsy services when required.
  • Advocate for the humane treatment of all animals.

Surgical Procedures:

  • Perform spay/neuter surgeries, eye enucleations, amputations, and other necessary procedures exclusively for The Asher House animals.
  • Follow established surgical protocols and maintain a sterile environment during procedures.

Compliance and Regulation:

  • Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal regulations related to animal welfare and veterinary practices.

Medical Records and Documentation:

  • Keep accurate and current medical records for all sanctuary animals.
  • Document all examinations, treatments, surgeries, and medications administered.

Health and Disease Management:

  • Implement disease control measures to maintain a healthy sanctuary environment.
  • Develop and oversee quarantine protocols for incoming animals and those exhibiting signs of illness.

Collaboration and Training:

  • Work closely with the animal care team to provide guidance on health and medical procedures.
  • Develop and implement protocols in collaboration with The Asher House staff.
  • Provide training and mentorship to staff on animal health and handling techniques.

Emergency Response:

  • Be available for on-call or emergency medical care for sanctuary animals outside of regular hours as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current licensure as a veterinarian in Oregon.
  • 5-7 years of experience as a practicing veterinarian (Required).
  • Experience in Shelter & Herd Medicine (Required).

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in companion animal medicine and surgery, with preference for candidates with shelter or rescue experience.
  • Strong understanding of animal behavior, health, and welfare.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, emotionally charged environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and handle animals of various sizes.
  • Prolonged standing and physical activity.
  • Capability to treat animals in various positions, requiring bending and kneeling.
  • Tolerance for allergens.

Relocation Requirements:

  • Must be able to reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work.

Licensing: Valid license issued by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board.
