Phlebotomists play a crucial role in the healthcare system by drawing, collecting, and managing laboratory specimens. They are trained to handle specimens from various age groups, including newborns, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. As OSHA Category I employees, phlebotomists are tasked with responsibilities that involve exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain flexible working hours to accommodate patient needs.
- Engage with patients in a courteous and respectful manner, actively seeking their feedback.
- Exhibit strong communication skills when instructing patients on special collection procedures.
- Adhere to HIPAA regulations to ensure patient confidentiality.
- Complete all assigned tasks promptly and efficiently.
- Uphold a professional demeanor and appearance at all times.
- Follow Universal Precautions to ensure safety and hygiene.
- Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and masks as required.
- Be knowledgeable about Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazard Communication, and Laboratory Safety protocols.
- Review the Phlebotomy Manual on an annual basis to stay updated.
- Execute specimen collection procedures including venipuncture, capillary sticks, urinalysis, throat cultures, glucose tolerances, and first aid.
- Effectively manage patients who experience adverse reactions during venipuncture.
- Demonstrate computer proficiency for accurate data entry and management.
- Register patients and fulfill receptionist duties as needed.
- Utilize two patient identifiers prior to specimen collection to ensure accuracy.
- Ensure proper labeling of specimens to maintain safety standards.
- Communicate critical lab results to physicians promptly.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization within the phlebotomy area.
- Manage inventory upon delivery and assist in unpacking supplies.
- Perform additional tasks as directed by supervisory staff.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
- Completion of a Phlebotomy or Medical Office Assistant training program is preferred.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, customer service-oriented environment.
- Physical capabilities required include repetitive motion, standing, walking, lifting, visual acuity, speaking, writing, reading, kneeling, reaching, turning, and bending.
