Job Title: Grounds Lead Worker

Join Melwood Veterans Services as a Grounds Lead Worker and take on a challenging role that requires strong leadership and organizational skills. As a Grounds Lead Worker, you will be responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of grounds workers, ensuring the daily operation of landscaping activities is carried out in a professional manner.

Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of grounds workers at assigned work areas.
  • Provide normal care of lawns, shrubbery, trees, walks, parking areas, fence lines, flower beds, etc.
  • Follow and help create precise schedules for cutting, fertilizing, liming, seeding, and application of herbicides, pruning, snow/ice detail, etc.
  • Observe and report any signs of abnormal development in lawns, shrubs, trees, etc. to the Grounds Maintenance Manager and/or Arborist.
  • Maintain records of attendance and work hours for each crew worker and process time and attendance.
  • Perform duties in accordance with safety rules, regulations, procedures, and/or instructions.
  • Notify the Grounds Maintenance Manager immediately of any workers' injury on the job.
  • Ensure daily maintenance/operation and storage of equipment and assigned vehicles, including proper handling and cleaning.
  • Assist workers with problems, appropriately referring and referring matters to supervisor or counselor.
  • Attend staff meetings as required.
  • Instruct and perform snow details.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:

Mainly work outside. Working conditions are subject to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Work conditions may be inconvenienced by dust, dirt, fumes, or flying objects (grass).

Employee may be subject to mandatory overtime within a half's day notice to include but not limited to meeting the requirements of the Project Work Statement.

Over time may need to be completed on weekends too, in order to meet the above requirements.

Physical Qualifications:

The incumbent must be able to stand/walk 95% of the work time and sit 5% in order to inspect grounds properly, check equipment, and complete paperwork and grounds tasks, such as pruning, spraying, and riding mowers.

He/she must be able to lift/carry 60 pounds and push/pull 100 pounds, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and handle, all requirements, necessary for loading and unloading materials and equipment, and for planting, cutting trees, and pruning.

He/she must be alert to safety hazards and have a method of communicating, so those around can respond and understand; must be able to see and tell colors, as this is necessary to drive equipment, inspect groundwork and perform grounds tasks.

Qualifications:

High school diploma, 1-year experience as a gardener, and 1-year experience as a supervising gardener; or high school diploma plus 6-year experience as a gardener plus 1-year experience as a supervising gardener.
