New York, New York, United States International Center of Photography Full time

Job Type:
Internship

Department: Exhibitions and Collections

Supervisor: Haley Kane / Sara Ickow

Internship Overview:
Curatorial interns at the International Center of Photography will collaborate closely with the exhibitions and collections teams to assist in the research, development, and execution of various exhibition projects. This role provides a comprehensive understanding of the exhibition process and fosters essential research skills. Interns will support the collections team in creating materials that reflect the institution's history and its collection.

Project Focus:
The specific projects will be tailored to align with the intern's individual interests and skills. There are numerous exhibitions and collections initiatives available, depending on the intern's capabilities and career aspirations. Potential projects may include: conducting research for upcoming exhibitions, aiding in collections management tasks such as cataloguing, writing artist biographies, developing educational materials for museum programming related to specific exhibitions, and more.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research for forthcoming projects, acquisitions, and exhibitions.
  • Assist in the preparation of exhibition materials, including checklists and press releases.
  • Help gather and complete missing information in institutional records, such as exhibition and publication histories, and create resources like artist biographies.
  • Support the creation of a rights database for copyright holders of photographers in the collection.
  • Research current photography exhibitions to aid the curatorial team in enhancing our exhibition program.
  • Depending on personal interests and skills, engage in cataloguing collection objects and conducting research within the institutional archive.
Learning Objectives:
The intern will gain insight into the complete exhibition process, from initial concept to research, production, and installation, by assisting with multiple exhibitions in development. This hands-on experience will provide valuable museum knowledge applicable to future roles. Through research assistance for exhibitions, interns will develop skills that will support their academic pursuits. Significant time will likely be spent on research and related tasks concerning collections exhibitions to deepen understanding of collections work.

Training and Development:
Interns will receive training in exhibition development, particularly in-depth research methodologies. They will learn to manage exhibition materials, such as checklists and press documents. Opportunities to attend meetings with marketing and communications teams regarding exhibition promotion and public programs will be available, allowing interns to shadow various department members throughout their internship.

Orientation Plan:
The intern will primarily collaborate with the curatorial assistant and associate director of exhibitions, while also gaining insights from the senior curator, director of exhibitions and collections, exhibitions project manager, and exhibitions production manager. This will provide a comprehensive understanding of all exhibition-making phases. Depending on their interests, interns may also spend time with the registrar to learn about collections management. Through their work with the exhibitions and collections team, interns will gain valuable perspectives on how this team collaborates with public programs, marketing, and education, highlighting the intersection of these areas.

Qualifications:
  • Completion of coursework in art history, museum studies, photography, or a related field.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Prior museum experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Ability to work independently when necessary while effectively collaborating within a team.
  • Familiarity with TMS/TMS Collections or other collections database software is a plus but not required.
