Lead Chemical Scientist

The Capital Area Division (CAD) of Applied Research Associates, Inc (ARA) is looking for a dedicated full-time Lead Chemical Scientist. The successful candidate will deliver operational, research and development, and training support, along with expert guidance and decision-making assistance to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) as part of its continuous Reachback contract. The ideal applicant will leverage applied knowledge to create, integrate, test, verify, validate, and implement CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high explosive) software/scenarios, based on experimental results, predicted phenomena, and theoretical and computational methods. Collaboration with other engineering teams will be essential to define modeling objectives, gather necessary model inputs and outputs, and ensure the accuracy of results. The presentation of modeling outcomes and decision support tools to both internal and external stakeholders through written reports and oral presentations is a key requirement. Additionally, this role necessitates the ability to critically evaluate the work of fellow engineers engaged in modeling projects. Shift work may be required during periods of heightened operational intensity or in support of significant DoD events and activities.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Conducting reviews of current research across various and potentially diverse subject areas for relevance and familiarity.
- Gaining familiarity with new experiments and resultant data pertinent to the project, assessing the overall quality of the presented findings.
- Providing comprehensive knowledge and CBRNE subject matter expertise to government entities and first responders.
- Assisting in the formulation of program plans, timelines, and technical documentation related to projects.
- Participating in technical and programmatic meetings to coordinate responses from scientific community members and reviewing assembled materials for technical accuracy, consistency, and completeness.
- Automating existing processes that are labor-intensive, thereby enhancing productivity and efficiency for Reachback analysts.
- Engaging in product standardization, template development, and stylistic enhancement.
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or a closely related field with a minimum of 10 years of experience, or a Master's degree with over 7 years of experience.
- Must possess a current and active security clearance.
- Must be a US Citizen.
- At least 3 - 5 years of prior scientific modeling experience in addressing WMD threats (primarily through modeling and simulation and/or testing experience) and a working knowledge of ArcGIS tools in an operational context.
- Experience in computer programming and a robust background in modeling and simulation of CBRNE hazards.
- Experience collaborating with organizations within the Department of Defense and other government agencies such as HHS, CDC, etc.
- Strong communication skills, technical presentation abilities, teamwork orientation, graphic visualization skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ph.D. (Ph.D. or D.Sc.) degree in Chemistry.
- Active TS/SCI security clearance.
