As a vital member of the healthcare team, the Nursing Assistant in the ICU provides essential, patient-centered care in a clinical environment under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). This role adheres to established standards of practice and complies with state regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Deliver basic yet high-quality care to patients, ensuring their comfort and dignity.
2. Manage clerical tasks and coordinate nursing unit activities, fostering a supportive environment for patients and their families.
3. Monitor and update patient orders and schedules for diagnostic and therapeutic services, ensuring accuracy in patient information and care levels.
4. Assist RNs with daily patient care tasks, including hygiene, feeding, and mobility support, utilizing assistive devices as necessary.
5. Accurately measure and document vital signs and other relevant patient data in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
Patient Interaction:
Participate in the admission, transfer, and discharge processes, ensuring a smooth transition for patients. Maintain patient call lights within reach and respond promptly to their needs. Conduct purposeful rounding to communicate observations and concerns to the RN.
Supportive Care:
Assist with nutritional needs, including diet review and meal setup. Maintain skin integrity through proper repositioning and skin care practices. Collect specimens and perform point-of-care testing as required.
Infection Control:
Adhere to infection prevention policies, demonstrating proper hand hygiene and sterile techniques. Coordinate necessary tests and treatments across departments to enhance patient care.
Administrative Duties:
Maintain knowledge of EHR systems for ordering supplies and processing patient charges. Facilitate communication within the healthcare team and manage office equipment efficiently.
Qualifications:
- Nurse Aide certification in good standing with the State Registry.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers required within 45 days of hire.
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- No prior experience necessary, but a willingness to learn is essential.
Skills Required:
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail.
- Adaptability to changing priorities and workloads.
