This position involves advanced skills in automotive mechanics, focusing on the upkeep and repair of contemporary small to medium-sized vehicles, construction machinery, emergency apparatus, or ground equipment.

Individuals in this role are tasked with performing computerized diagnostics, executing repairs, conducting on-board resurfacing, overhauling, replacing parts, and carrying out both preventative and corrective maintenance, as well as safety and emissions inspections, and road testing of vehicles and their components.

Work encompasses internal combustion gas, hybrid, diesel, or alternative fuel engines, along with electrical and hydraulic systems. The role operates under the guidance of a supervisor or manager within the Equipment Services Division, with related tasks as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct general maintenance and expert repairs on various equipment, including cars, light and medium trucks, emergency vehicles, motorcycles, and other small transportation and construction machinery;
- Assess equipment for wear, damage, or defects through visual inspections, road tests, specialized electronic diagnostic tools, or other computerized methods to identify necessary repairs and evaluate vehicle performance;
- Disassemble, repair, reassemble, and adjust axle assemblies, drive shafts, transfer cases, clutches, and transmissions;
- Rebuild or replace defective automotive subassemblies;
- Overhaul internal combustion engines, transmissions, and drive units;
- Repair and, if needed, replace steering systems and align wheels;
- Adjust, repair, resurface, and replace brake system components;
- Repair exhaust, ignition, fuel, and electrical systems;
- Conduct safety inspections on vehicles as per state regulations;
- Test automotive computer systems utilizing electronic equipment;
- Perform tasks related to the commissioning and decommissioning of vehicles;
- Maintain manual and computerized records and logs related to vehicle maintenance, repairs, labor, and materials used;
- Execute emergency road repairs, off-site repairs, and provide mobile towing services;
- Operate vehicles to diagnose symptoms and isolate issues before and after repairs to ensure proper functioning;
- Communicate effectively with repair staff across different shifts regarding ongoing repairs;
- Perform minor cutting and welding tasks;
- Lead, guide, and train other mechanics or automotive aides.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent,
AND I. and II.
I. A. Associate's degree in Automotive Technology or a closely related field, along with two (2) years of experience as an automotive mechanic in a standard repair environment; OR
I. B. Four (4) years of experience as outlined in IA. above.

AND
II.

- Possession of at least *four (4) of the following certifications issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE):

A1 – Engine Repair
A2 – Automotive Transmission/Transaxle
A3 – Manual Drive Train and Axles
A4 – Suspension and Steering
A5 – Brakes
A6 – Electrical / Electronic Systems
A7 – Heating and Air Conditioning
A8 – Engine Performance
L1 – Advanced Engine Performance Specialist

  • The incumbent must maintain at least four (4) certifications throughout their employment in this role.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Class D Operator's license at the time of appointment. Valid Non-CDL Class C License within six (6) months of appointment, to be maintained throughout employment in this role.
- Possession of a Motor Vehicle Inspector's license (Group 1) within three (3) months of appointment, to be maintained throughout employment in this role.
- Possession of Tow Truck Endorsement within six (6) months of appointment, to be maintained throughout employment in this role.

- Must provide a suitable selection of current tools and equipment necessary for repairs to light-duty vehicles at the time of appointment (e.g., socket set, open-end wrenches, screwdrivers, metric tools, digital VOM, standard electronic testing equipment, etc.).
