Wildlife Ecologist Research Assistant

East Lansing, Michigan, United States Michigan State University Full time

Explore an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic team at Michigan State University as a Wildlife Ecologist Research Assistant. This temporary position offers a unique chance to contribute to innovative projects focusing on vector-borne disease ecology and management.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to assist in research activities, including field studies, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with scientists, postdoctoral scholars, and undergraduate students on various projects related to wildlife-habitat interactions, disease ecology, and human dimensions of wildlife management.

This role is part of the Midwest Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Disease (MCE-VBD) at MSU, which aims to prevent vector-borne disease in the Upper Midwest through collaborative research and real-world experiences for public health entomologists.

The primary project involves developing an innovative deer-targeted area-wide tick control method to reduce the risk of tick-borne disease. The technician will help adapt an approach initially developed to reduce bovine tuberculosis risk among white-tailed deer in agricultural landscapes to urban-suburban environments.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct field research using trail cameras across all seasons to characterize the use of suburban/city parks by wildlife (deer and meso-mammals)
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate drug delivery unit protocols to free-ranging white-tailed deer
  • Engage stakeholders to assess Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviors regarding ticks and tick control and assess acceptance of various tick control approaches for public lands
  • Review and summarize deer-targeted wildlife disease management approaches, including reducing tick-borne disease
  • Supervise and co-mentor undergraduate students
  • Synthesize and communicate results in co-developed reports, presentations, and publications

The ideal candidate should possess excellent organizational and communication skills, be able to work independently and collaboratively, and have experience working in research settings, particularly with wildlife surveillance cameras and GIS/GPS data.

What We Offer

Michigan State University offers a competitive salary, ranging from $40,000 to $50,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. The position also comes with benefits, including access to university resources and opportunities for professional development.

How to Apply

To apply, please submit a single document containing a letter of interest, CV/resume, unofficial transcripts, and a list of three references. Please ensure the name of the file includes your last and first name (e.g., Doe.Jane.pdf). A statement of your areas of interest regarding wildlife and/or disease ecology research and how prior activities support your application should be included in the letter of interest.
