Job Summary

Maricopa County is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Detention Officer to join our team. As a Detention Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of inmates, visitors, and staff within our detention facilities. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct security walks and head counts to ensure the safety and security of inmates and staff
  • Perform facility and inmate cell searches to maintain a secure environment
  • Search inmates and visitors for contraband and ensure compliance with detention policies
  • Provide inmate services such as recreation, meal service, and visitation
  • Communicate effectively with inmates, visitors, and staff to maintain a positive and respectful environment
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation, polygraph exam, and medical exam
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of work experience, prior law enforcement experience, and/or prior military experience preferred
  • Currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a commercial driver's license and/or weapons certification equivalent to standards set by Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST)
Working Conditions

The Detention Officer will work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, with regular exposure to stressful and potentially hazardous situations. The officer will be required to work any shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and may be required to work overtime.

Selection Procedure

The Maricopa County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates who are considered the most highly qualified. The hiring authority will consider candidates from a list provided by the Human Resources Department. Candidates referred for consideration by the department will be required to successfully complete a comprehensive background check, polygraph examination, psychological screening, and medical screening with attestation of physical readiness. Upon successful completion of these requirements, all hired candidates are required to participate in and successfully complete a 12-week Detention Academy, which includes Physical Readiness Assessments, to continue employment as a Detention Officer.
