Job Overview:

This advanced-level role within the manufacturing sector primarily involves material handling through forklift operation, weigh-up, and packaging tasks within the production department. The Production Operator is responsible for ensuring the highest quality products at the most efficient cost while adhering to customer specifications and delivery timelines in line with Spartech's policies and procedures. As part of this role, you will also progress through our operator training program, which includes responsibilities in extrusion production lines and automated material handling.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform all job duties with a focus on safety and maintaining a secure workplace.
  • Assist operators in unloading winder equipment.
  • Support operators during changeovers.
  • Inspect finished rolls for quality, ensuring no visible dust or non-conforming characteristics.
  • Read and comprehend shop orders effectively.
  • Communicate efficiently with operators and shift leads.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment and the production area.
  • Stage rolls and packaging materials necessary for production.
  • Accurately manage inventory movements in the Management Information System (MIS).
  • Remove, weigh, and package materials from the winder/stacker, transporting them to designated warehouse areas.
  • Document daily downtime with appropriate reason codes.
  • Operate forklifts as required, including changing gas cylinders and performing general maintenance.
  • Commit to a full workweek and be available for overtime as needed.
  • Conduct SQC and quality testing, ensuring all paperwork and material labeling is accurate.
  • Cut cores/cardboard as specified in work orders.
  • Receive additional instructions from operators.
  • Demonstrate competency in plant operator roles.

Additional Duties:

  • May involve training other employees.
  • Actively participate in Kaizen and lean initiatives.

Other responsibilities may be assigned as necessary to support business operations.

Performance Metrics:

  • Safe and precise movement of raw materials and by-products to manufacturing equipment.
  • Assist operators with various tasks as needed.
  • Ensure accurate documentation.
  • Complete responsibilities in a timely and organized manner.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the manufacturing area.
  • Achieve certification as a forklift operator.
  • Uphold a safe working environment.
  • Guide and mentor individuals as part of backup operator duties.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Strong math and reading skills are essential.
  • Ability to complete paperwork accurately and promptly.

Mental Requirements:

  • Good hand/eye coordination and vision are necessary.
  • Must be a self-starter and work well in a team.
  • Awareness of safety considerations affecting manufacturing operations is crucial.
