About the Unit:

AG7 is a specialized 24-bed post-surgical care unit committed to delivering exceptional and compassionate care to a diverse adult and geriatric patient demographic. Our unit primarily caters to patients undergoing planned elective surgeries, with a small percentage admitted directly from the Emergency Department or physician referrals. Our areas of expertise include orthopedic, general surgery, and urology. We thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment that collaborates across multiple disciplines to ensure personalized care for each patient. We take pride in mentoring new graduates, providing invaluable experience as they embark on their nursing careers, while also encouraging seasoned nurses to pursue further growth and development within the surgical service line. AG7 fosters a culture of teamwork, support, professional advancement, shared decision-making, and a commitment to maintaining a healthy work/life balance.

Role Overview:

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) serves as an integral member of the healthcare team, applying sound nursing judgment grounded in preparation, knowledge, and competency. The LPN is responsible for delivering care and IV therapy in accordance with UPMC LPN Practice Guidelines and policies, as well as adhering to State Board Regulations. This role involves participating in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care, utilizing focused assessments in settings where nursing occurs under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or other licensed UPMC provider. The LPN is expected to take assignments that align with their licensure in medical/surgical/telemetry or Emergency Department settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Function as a vital member of the healthcare team, exercising sound nursing judgment based on education and experience.
  • Engage in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care through focused assessments.
  • Communicate effectively with licensed professional nurses and the healthcare team to seek guidance when patient care needs exceed the LPN's scope of practice.
  • Obtain supervision and instruction when implementing new or unfamiliar nursing practices.
  • Adhere to established policies and procedures of UPMC, LPN Practice Guidelines, and the State Practice Act.
  • Develop daily goals and care plans that involve patients as partners, considering their individual needs holistically.
  • Document patient conditions comprehensively to enhance communication among caregivers.
  • Participate in unit activities and assist care team members as needed.
  • Provide thorough education to patients and families to facilitate their understanding throughout the care process.
  • Support the orientation and development of new LPNs and patient care support staff.

Qualifications:

Successful completion of a Licensed Practical Nursing Program approved by the State Board of Nursing is required, along with 0 to 2 years of experience. Completion of an IV therapy curriculum is necessary within a specified timeframe post-hire. The LPN must demonstrate the ability to provide care that meets the age-specific needs of patients and establish positive relationships with healthcare team members and patients.

Licensure and Certifications:

The LPN must maintain state licensure in the practicing state or possess a multistate license under the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is also required.

Equal Opportunity:

UPMC is an Equal Opportunity Employer/Disability/Veteran.
