Job Overview

Position: Registered Nurse (RN) - Progressive Critical Care Unit (CCU)

Facility: Elmhurst Hospital

Work Schedule:

  • Night Shift: 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM

Weekend and Holiday Expectations:

  • Weekends: Required every third weekend (Saturday-Sunday).
  • Holidays: Alternating groups with specific holidays assigned.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Deliver professional nursing care in compliance with the Illinois Professional Registered Nurse Practice Act and hospital regulations.
  • Employ critical thinking skills to evaluate patient conditions, identify changes, and plan and assess care.
  • Track patient progress and document observations accurately.
  • Assign appropriate patient care duties to other team members.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team to meet unit objectives.

Required Qualifications:

  • License: Valid Illinois RN license.
  • Certifications: CPR/BLS (American Heart Association or Red Cross) and ACLS required.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 1-2 years in critical care nursing.
    • Candidates in the Transition Program must have at least 1 year of acute care RN experience.
  • Education:
    • Associate's Degree in Nursing or higher.
    • If only holding an Associate's Degree, must complete a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing within five years of starting the role.

Unit Information:

  • Bed Count: 39
  • Patient Demographics: Critical care and step-down patients
  • Common Conditions Treated: COPD exacerbation, STEMI, respiratory/cardiac arrest, neuro/cardiac/vascular surgery
  • Average Daily Admissions: 5-10
  • Nurse to Patient Ratio: Based on acuity (1:1, 1:2, or 1:3)
  • Career Advancement Opportunities: Positions such as Clinical Educator, RN Clinical Coordinator, Clinical Manager, and Clinical Director. Additional opportunities available on committees.
  • Team Environment: Community-focused hospital with a patient-centered approach. Ideal candidates are team-oriented, eager to learn, and committed to improving patient care.

Orientation Process:

  • 4-day orientation followed by tailored departmental training based on experience and skill level. Minimum floor training lasts 6 weeks.
