Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Plumbing Craftsman to join our team at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. As a key member of our facilities team, you will be responsible for performing skilled plumbing work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of district plumbing systems and components.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain all plumbing systems within CMS in accordance with state and local code enforcement requirements, collaborating with relevant departments and agencies.
  • Respond to operational emergencies affecting cafeteria services, broken water heaters, frozen pipes, and gas leaks, evaluating situations and taking corrective action.
  • Review blueprints, drawings, and specifications for new construction and renovations to determine plumbing system layouts, water supply networks, and waste and drainage systems.
  • Measure, cut, thread, assemble, and install pipe, tubing, and gas lines.
  • Plan daily activities, complete paperwork, conduct truck inspections, and stock inventory, evaluating a weekly open work order backlog.
  • Manage P-card budgets, purchase order requests, and payments, vehicle mileage records, supply requests, and vehicle repair.
  • Maintain and repair gas lines downstream of the meter, mixing valves, and irrigation systems.
  • Operate specialized machinery and tools used in repair and maintenance of all plumbing and plumbing systems.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on plumbing systems and fixtures.
  • Act as a team leader, training, coaching, and counseling employees, providing input on performance evaluations and promotions.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. with additional specialized/technical training or some college courses.
  • 3 years of commercial or 5 years of residential related experience in the plumbing field or a combination of training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 years of related experience.
Licensing and Certification
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Mecklenburg County Journeyman's Plumber Certificate or State of North Carolina Plumbing License or Plumbing Technical License.
  • State of North Carolina Fire Sprinkler License M-1 (desirable).
  • Commercial Driver's License (desirable).
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of plumbing codes and regulations, including City, County, State, Federal, and other codes, laws, and ordinances pertinent to plumbing work.
  • Knowledge of pipefitting theory and techniques.
  • Knowledge of work order procedures, credit card procedures, International Standard Organization (ISO) procedures, and other departmental procedures.
  • Knowledge of trade tools and occupational hazards, safety precautions, local codes, and regulations pertaining to the trades.
  • Ability to use materials and tools found in plumbing construction, maintenance, and repair of gas, water, sewer, and irrigation systems, including cafeteria equipment and appliances plumbed with water or gas.
  • Ability to read blueprints, drawings, and specifications and determine processes.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
