POSITION OVERVIEW
This role is a non-represented, non-sworn Police Recruit, receiving benefits while participating in Police Academy training. A Police Academy Trainee must successfully complete the MCOLES Basic Police Academy to qualify for promotion to a Police Officer position within the Troy Police Department. The City of Troy will cover all necessary tuition, course fees, equipment, and uniforms associated with the Police Academy training. Regular attendance in classes is mandatory.
QUALIFICATIONS
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of the application period unless otherwise specified. Candidates who meet these criteria will be invited for an oral interview. Virtual interviews may be arranged upon request for special circumstances.
- Must be at least 21 years old at the time of MCOLES activation.
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Vision must be correctable to 20/20 with no significant defects; normal color vision; normal hearing capabilities.
- Able to successfully complete any physical agility assessments required for the Police Academy.
- Must demonstrate 12th-grade reading and writing proficiency as assessed by the College English Placement Test or a similar examination.
- Education:
- Possession of an Associate's Degree or a Bachelor's Degree in any discipline, a minimum of 60 credit hours or 90 semester hours from an accredited institution, or the completion of an Associate's degree or 60 credit hours upon finishing the MCOLES Basic Police Academy.
- Recent active duty military experience (within five years prior to the application closing date; honorable discharge) may substitute for college years on a year-for-year basis.
- Experience in private security, campus security, or reserves will not be considered.
- No felony convictions.
- Valid Michigan Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record (according to City of Troy standards). Out-of-state applicants must provide a current driving record at the time of application and obtain a State of Michigan license within one month of employment.
- Must have successfully completed the MCOLES Pre-employment Tests (reading, writing, and physical ability assessments). Proof must be submitted with the application.
- Empco Testing:
- Must possess a current passing test score (minimum of 70%) by the closing date of this announcement. Candidates must select "City of Troy" for the City to receive their results. Tests that expire before the closing date will not be accepted. Registration with Empco is required. Test fees are the responsibility of the applicant.
A Police Academy Trainee will be promoted to a sworn Police Officer with the City of Troy upon
- Successful completion of the MCOLES Basic Police Academy, and
- Passing the MCOLES licensing examination upon finishing the Basic Police Academy.
- Starting salary as per the Troy Police Officers Association Collective Bargaining Agreement (currently: $75,946/year).
SELECTION PROCESS will include application review, interviews, background checks, psychological evaluations, pre-employment physicals, and drug screenings, in addition to the Empco written test (40%) and interview (60%).
