As a key member of the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Services, this role serves as a liaison Speech-Language Pathologist dedicated to supporting individuals with varying degrees of intellectual disabilities. The primary responsibilities include assessing, coordinating, and implementing comprehensive speech and language programs within assigned units, while ensuring effective communication is integrated with social, recreational, vocational, educational, and daily living activities.

The Speech-Language Pathologist will conduct thorough communication evaluations, deliver both direct and indirect therapeutic interventions, provide training to multidisciplinary staff, and participate in scheduled interdisciplinary meetings. Additionally, as part of the Murdoch's Swallow Team, the SLP will evaluate swallowing capabilities and offer necessary services and guidelines for individuals upon admission and as required.

Work Schedule: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, with some flexibility.

Essential Employee Designation: All employees of Murdoch Center are classified as essential during adverse weather and emergency situations.

Murdoch Developmental Center operates as a 24/7 state residential facility, serving approximately 400 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). It is a supportive community where professionals collaborate with individuals of diverse ages and abilities.

Qualifications: Applicants must be in good standing with the North Carolina Health Care Personnel Registry.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Proficient understanding of speech and language pathology, including standardized and functional assessment methods, as well as knowledge of various communication disorders affecting children and adults.
  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with augmentative communication, assistive technology, basic sign language, and swallowing disorders is advantageous.
  • Eligibility for CCC or CFY from ASHA and the NC SLP license is required.
Management Preferences:
  • Proven ability to assess and address communication challenges related to developmental disorders.
  • Capability to learn and apply formal behavioral interventions.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Licensure: Must be licensed by the Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
