Our core purpose reflects our values and operational approach, guiding us in our mission to care, grow, and win together.

ABOUT THE RETAIL LEADERSHIP INTERNSHIP
This internship provides a hands-on, paid training experience of 40 hours per week, designed to cultivate your leadership skills within a Target store. As a Retail Leadership Intern, you will receive a comprehensive preview of the Executive Team Leader position over a specified timeframe. Throughout this management internship, you will collaborate closely with fellow managers and team members to gain insights into the functioning of Target's retail operations and the competencies required for success in a managerial role. You will be introduced to various facets of the store's operations, with a primary focus on learning how to lead a segment of the store.

This program aims to equip individuals with the skills necessary to lead effectively within a retail environment. You will discover how to enhance guest experiences and influence your store's financial, team, and operational outcomes. Working alongside a mentor, you will observe their leadership style and learn how to manage their departments effectively. You will have the chance to take on leadership responsibilities within your mentor's departments, with guidance and support throughout your journey. Your daily activities will involve motivating a team, driving sales performance, merchandising products, and ensuring an outstanding experience for our guests. Your development is our priority, and you can expect continuous developmental discussions to support your growth. While you will oversee daily operations alongside your team members, your leadership will foster a positive culture and guide your team toward achieving their objectives.

As a Retail Leadership Intern, you will gain:

  • Insight into guest service principles and experience in cultivating a guest-first team culture across the store.
  • Skills in guest engagement, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of retail business fundamentals.
  • Experience in planning and managing departmental workloads to align with business priorities and achieve service and sales targets.
  • Experience in leading a team of hourly team members and team leaders while developing business strategies and objectives.
  • Skills in recruitment, selection, and talent management of hourly team members and leaders.

A typical day may include:

  • Engaging with team members on the sales floor and in the backroom to align on daily business priorities.
  • Collaborating with your Executive Team Lead (ETL) mentor and other leaders to understand their roles.
  • Leading daily priorities such as stocking shelves, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for guests, and assisting in store displays.
  • Partnering with leaders to address team member performance through teaching, coaching, training, and providing timely feedback.
  • Resolving team member concerns and removing obstacles to ensure smooth operations and goal achievement.
  • Leading and presenting at daily team huddles with peers and leadership.
  • Setting daily goals and organizing plans within the store.
  • Summarizing results and priorities with peers and leadership.
  • Following up on team member attendance and necessary coaching.
  • Collaborating with store leaders to establish goals and expectations.
  • Analyzing business reports and guest insights to identify and address opportunities for improvement.
  • Delivering exceptional guest experiences by empowering team members to assist guests effectively.
  • Proposing new ideas and solutions to enhance business or team performance.
  • Taking the initiative to learn about Target's leadership expectations and seeking growth opportunities.
  • Actively participating in training activities and developmental events throughout the internship.
  • Demonstrating a willingness to take risks and embrace new challenges.
  • Upholding a culture of ethical conduct, safety, and compliance while encouraging the team to do the same.
  • Working safely at all times, identifying and correcting hazards, and adhering to safety policies.
  • Fostering an inclusive, diverse, and secure workplace culture.
  • Understanding the responsibilities of various departments to enhance business acumen.

The core responsibilities of this position are outlined in this description. Duties may change as business needs evolve.

ABOUT YOU
You may be a great fit if:

  • You thrive in a dynamic and energetic environment, working efficiently as part of a team to serve our guests.
  • You find joy in providing service that makes guests say, "I LOVE TARGET."
  • You enjoy leading teams in stocking, setting, and selling Target products, which is central to our operations.
  • You prefer an active role rather than a traditional desk job, engaging with team members and guests throughout the day.

We offer comprehensive training to help you become an effective leader in our stores. However, some skills are beneficial to have from the start:

  • Previous retail experience is preferred but not mandatory.
  • A strong interest in pursuing a career in retail management.
  • Leadership qualities and a collaborative mindset.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to current technology.

  • Skills in managing workload and prioritizing tasks autonomously.
  • A welcoming and helpful demeanor.
  • Strong communication abilities.

  • Competence in interpreting instructions, reports, and information.
  • Proficiency in handling cash register operations accurately.
  • Capability to climb ladders as needed.
