This role is distinctive as the rehabilitation specialists are employed by the center and collaborate in the recovery area with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and radiology technicians.
The patients treated all undergo outpatient total joint procedures and sacroiliac joint fusions. Patients and their caregivers receive a session of rehabilitation and are able to return home the same day.Patients travel from various locations for a hip resurfacing procedure, which is a conservative alternative to total hip replacement, allowing for a return to high-level activities, including contact sports.
Work hours are variable and flexible based on the surgical caseload for the week. The center operates Monday through Friday. Rehabilitation Specialists receive a shift differential of $4 more per hour after 4 pm.Key Responsibilities:
The per diem rehabilitation specialist delivers therapeutic, patient-centered care in accordance with licensed physician orders, adhering to the philosophy of the surgery center, standards of practice, and regulations of governing bodies.
Core Duties:
1. Review the surgical schedule and compile a list of therapy patients. Prepare instructional materials for patients.
2. Introduce yourself to the patient and caregiver(s), explaining your role in their post-operative care.
3. Assess the patient’s readiness for x-rays if ordered and therapy sessions.
4. Communicate with the radiology technician regarding any x-rays that are ordered.
5. Provide guidance to patients and caregivers on physician-specific rehabilitation protocols for Hip Resurfacing, Total Hip Arthroplasty (Direct Anterior and Posterior), Uni and Total Knee Arthroplasty, and Sacroiliac Joint Fusion.
7. Ensure proper fitting of crutches and/or walkers.
8. Instruct and ensure safe use of assistive devices for transfers and ambulation, considering proper weight-bearing status on level surfaces and stairs to simulate the patient’s home environment.
9. Issue durable medical equipment (DME) as required and complete necessary paperwork.
10. Address any questions from patients and caregivers regarding post-operative rehabilitation.
11. Complete therapy documentation accurately.
12. Demonstrate proper infection control practices.
13. Provide emergency care in accordance with physician and administrative policies as needed.
14. Communicate relevant patient information to PACU nurses, radiology technicians, surgeons, or other medical staff as necessary.
15. Ensure patient safety by maintaining a secure environment and compliance with the Life Safety Code.
Employment Considerations:
Coordinate work schedules with the lead rehabilitation specialist.
Work schedules may be adjusted based on administrative decisions to accommodate patient surgery schedules.
Staff are expected to conclude their duties when work is completed.
Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited physical therapy program.
A minimum of 5 years of clinical experience is required, including at least two years of acute care hospital-based treatment for total joint patients.
Current BLS certification.
Compensation:
Min: USD $40.00/Hr.
Max: USD $45.00/Hr.
