Columbia, South Carolina, United States Integer Technologies LLC Full time

Company Overview

Integer Technologies LLC is a pioneering research and product development firm established by experts in science and engineering, dedicated to advancing technology and enhancing national security. We engage in R&D for cutting-edge systems and technologies tailored for the Department of Defense (DoD) and various U.S. Government entities, transforming research into significant products applicable in both military and commercial sectors. Our primary research portfolio encompasses initiatives in power and energy systems, unmanned systems (particularly maritime), digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing.

Our power and energy systems initiatives support the DoD's efforts in platform electrification, including naval vessels. Our research focuses on hybrid and electric propulsion systems, extensive energy storage solutions, power conversion technologies, autonomy, digital twins, and the integration of mission systems to ensure rapid and dependable power system responses.

Position Overview

The role of the Electrical Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Engineer necessitates a robust foundation in real-time simulation of electrical power systems, power converters, electric machines, and control systems. Candidates should possess a comprehensive understanding of the multi-domain physics governing power system components and be adept at maintaining virtual models of physical systems for applications such as health monitoring, diagnostics, prognostics, and advanced control strategies. The Electrical HIL Engineer must be capable of identifying critical features and dynamic behaviors of physical systems across electrical, thermal, and mechanical domains, and proficient in developing computer models that accurately reflect these characteristics and behaviors.

A successful candidate will have experience with controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL), where a physical power system's controller executes control application code in conjunction with a real-time power system model on a simulator. Additionally, the candidate should be experienced in power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) testing, where actual power hardware is evaluated at full-scale power and voltage levels by interfacing with the simulator through power amplifiers.

The ideal candidate will exhibit a commitment to continuous learning, expanding their expertise to stay at the forefront of the field. Organizational skills and attention to detail are essential. This position may require interaction with clients whose needs are often evolving and complex; thus, strong communication skills are also advantageous.

Integer Technologies LLC is a research and development organization focused on science and technology. Much of our work involves crafting solutions for intricate problems that currently lack established answers. To meet both internal and client project objectives, all candidates must be capable of conducting research, assimilating new concepts from various engineering disciplines on advanced topics, and documenting findings in an accessible manner for non-experts.

Core Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Proven expertise in at least one computer modeling and simulation environment (MATLAB/Simulink preferred).
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java).
  • Understanding of HIL challenges, including communication protocol coordination, amplifier bandwidth selection, and latency minimization.
  • Mastery of at least one real-time computer modeling and simulation environment such as RTDS, Opal-RT, Speedgoat, etc.
  • Experience with controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) testing.
  • Experience with power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) testing.
  • Experience testing power equipment such as converters, generators, motors, and/or batteries using power hardware-in-the-loop.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Machinery Control Systems including sensing, communication, and system-level controls for electric plants, machinery, and electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with ship power systems, microgrid power systems, and/or integrated power system concepts.
  • U.S. citizenship is required. Candidates must be eligible to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance, which necessitates U.S. citizenship.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • A graduate degree (Masters/PhD) in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a similar technical discipline. Relevant industry experience, technical leadership, publications, or other recognitions may substitute for an advanced degree.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of simulation solver technologies and numerical integration methods, along with awareness of industry best practices for robust numerical convergence.
  • Experience with power systems in military and/or marine applications.
  • Experience utilizing software version control and collaborating in an agile coding environment with peer reviews.
  • Experience in writing, simulating, and deploying control software for power systems and components.
  • Experience in automating and scheduling simulation batches.
  • Experience with objective functions and optimal control of dynamic systems.
  • Experience with machine learning applied to data-driven modeling.
  • Real-time simulation of power system components using RTDS, Typhoon, Speedgoat, etc.
