LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 190 Days

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master's Degree in Speech Pathology/Communication Disorders from an accredited institution.
2. Current South Carolina Teacher certification as a speech language therapist.
3. Current South Carolina Speech Pathologist license on file.
4. Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP), or eligibility for certification.

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: PRINCIPAL

JOB SUMMARY:
The School-Based Speech-Language Specialist plays a vital role in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating communication disorders among students in the educational environment. They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to foster students' academic achievement and social growth. The primary objective of the Specialist is to enhance students' communication abilities, which may encompass speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assessment:
  • Conduct thorough evaluations to assess students' communication capabilities and identify speech and language disorders.
  • Administer standardized assessments alongside informal measures to collect pertinent information regarding students' communication skills.
  • Analyze assessment data to ascertain the nature and severity of communication disorders and formulate individualized treatment plans.
2. Treatment:
  • Design and implement tailored treatment plans that address students' specific needs and objectives.
  • Facilitate therapy sessions focusing on speech production, language comprehension and expression, social communication, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders.
  • Employ evidence-based techniques and therapeutic interventions to promote communication skills development.
  • Collaborate with educators and other school personnel to integrate speech and language objectives into the academic curriculum and classroom activities.
3. Progress Monitoring and Documentation:
  • Continuously monitor students' progress and modify treatment plans as necessary to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Maintain precise and current documentation of assessment results, treatment plans, progress notes, and other relevant records.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding students' progress, goals, and suggested strategies for home practice.
4. Collaboration and Consultation:
  • Work in partnership with teachers, special education staff, and other professionals to support students' overall academic and social-emotional development.
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and provide valuable input regarding students' speech and language needs and progress.
  • Offer consultation and guidance to educators and staff on strategies for facilitating communication skills development in the classroom.
5. Professional Development:
  • Stay informed about current research, best practices, and trends in the field of speech-language pathology.
  • Engage in professional development activities, workshops, conferences, and continuing education opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Maintain licensure and certifications required by state regulations and professional organizations.
