Job Description

Overview of Responsibilities

This entry-level role within the Water Distribution and Wastewater Management division of Public Works involves performing essential inspection, repair, installation, and maintenance tasks to support municipal water distribution and wastewater systems.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts inspections, repairs, and maintenance of lift and pump stations, including water, storm, and sewer systems;
  • Engages in fieldwork on water, storm, and sewer lines, as well as fire hydrants;
  • Executes daily upkeep of sanitary and storm sewers utilizing specialized equipment;
  • Responds to service requests regarding sewer issues and resolves blockages in municipal main lines;
  • Performs utility locates for various lines and hydrants for construction projects;
  • May assist the Meter Technician by undertaking some of their responsibilities;
  • Operates and maintains light vehicles, hand tools, power saws, and small engine equipment;
  • Handles sewer combo trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, and excavators for repair and maintenance tasks;
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment, including general cleaning and upkeep;
  • Operates vehicles to transport tools and supplies to job sites;
  • Conducts hydrant flow tests;
  • Assists with special projects and performs additional related duties as assigned.

Supervisory and Budgetary Responsibilities

  • No supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
  • Must obtain a Class II Distribution license within three years of employment;
  • Must secure a Class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement;
  • During the probationary period, the new hire must pass the written examination and obtain the CDL with air endorsement within six months of continuous employment;
  • Certification as a Registered Flagger from the American Traffic Safety Services Association is required within three years of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

  • Understanding of industrial safety practices, especially in confined spaces and high voltage areas;
  • Familiarity with construction and maintenance practices for sanitary sewers and related facilities;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster effective relationships with citizens and colleagues;
  • Ability to manage interactions with individuals in distress or confusion;
  • Capacity to remain composed under pressure;
  • Willingness to work in challenging conditions, including confined spaces;
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and schematics;

  • Proficiency in recognizing and responding to emergency situations;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills;
  • Commitment to ethical standards and confidentiality;

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Physical activities may include climbing, balancing, reaching, and using hands for various tasks;
  • Work is performed outdoors with exposure to varying weather conditions;
  • May involve working on local and state roadways;
  • Exposure to close quarters, moving parts, and potentially hazardous materials;
  • Occasional lifting of heavy objects, up to 200 pounds;
  • Availability for on-call duties during designated times.
