JOB OVERVIEW

This role is essential for executing fire suppression and emergency rescue operations.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of specialized training in firefighting, complemented by a high school diploma.
  • Experience sufficient to grasp the fundamental principles associated with the primary responsibilities of the role, typically gained through an apprenticeship or similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the operation of relevant vehicles or equipment.
  • Capability to meet the current standards established by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responding to fire alarms, traffic incidents, medical emergencies, rescue operations, and other urgent situations as part of a fire and rescue team.
  • Selecting appropriate hose nozzles based on the nature of the fire and directing water or chemical streams accordingly.
  • Utilizing ladders to access upper levels of structures for the purpose of rescuing individuals from hazardous situations.
  • Operating firefighting apparatus and equipment at emergency scenes.
  • Creating openings in buildings for ventilation or entry as necessary.
  • Conducting searches within buildings to locate and rescue victims from various situations.
  • Protecting property from damage caused by water and smoke using specialized equipment.
  • Providing initial emergency medical assistance, including basic first aid and CPR, to those affected by fire and smoke.
  • Assisting emergency medical services personnel in delivering advanced life support as required.
  • Maintaining and testing firefighting tools and equipment.
  • Communicating effectively with supervisors and fellow firefighters during emergency responses using two-way radios and other devices.
  • Rescuing individuals and animals from perilous situations.
  • Containing and decontaminating hazardous material spills as certified.
  • Performing various salvage and cleanup tasks, including the removal of water and debris.
  • Supporting inspections of buildings for fire hazards and adherence to fire prevention regulations.
  • Delivering presentations on fire safety and prevention to community groups and schools.
  • Maintaining fire apparatus, facilities, equipment, and grounds.
  • Participating in training drills and courses related to firefighting techniques and equipment operation.
  • Driving and operating firefighting vehicles and equipment as certified.
  • Carrying out additional related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY STRUCTURE

Work assignments are given by the Lieutenant or Sergeant, who provides general instructions. Supervisors review completed tasks for adherence to procedures and the appropriateness of outcomes.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include Fire Department standard operating procedures, as well as NFPA, OSHA, and GEMA/FEMA regulations. While these guidelines are generally clear, some interpretation may be necessary.

WORK COMPLEXITY AND SCOPE

  • The work involves a range of fire suppression and emergency rescue tasks. The necessity to respond to life-threatening situations adds to the complexity of the role.
  • The primary objective of this position is to ensure the safety of life and property within the City of Richmond Hill through effective fire suppression and emergency response.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is performed in various positions including sitting, standing, walking, and bending. Employees frequently lift objects of varying weights, climb ladders, and use tools requiring dexterity.
  • Work is conducted in an office setting but may also take place outdoors or at emergency sites. Employees may encounter noise, dust, chemicals, and hazardous conditions requiring protective equipment.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
