  • Provide technical support to the shelter veterinarian during exams and surgeries, including intubation, IV catheters, anesthesia monitoring, surgical prep, dental prophylaxis, and venipuncture.
  • Participate in rounds with the veterinarian and identify animals in the population requiring treatment or evaluation in accordance with shelter protocols.
  • Assist veterinarian(s) in medical procedures, including preparation and analysis of in-house diagnostics such as fecal flotation, ear/skin cytology, urinalysis, and blood smear.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of medical supplies and handle a large variety of animals, including wildlife, in a humane way.
  • Communicate effectively with foster volunteers, adopters, and shelter veterinarians, and perform related duties as required.
Requirements
  • At least two (2) years of full-time experience working as a veterinary technician or veterinary assistant, or four (4) years part-time or equivalent experience.
  • At least one (1) year of surgical and anesthesia experience.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVT) and those with shelter medicine experience.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of fifty pounds (50 lbs) and work with all levels of management and in a diverse workplace setting.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to maintain a clean and organized workspace.
  • Good computer skills and the ability to learn and use Chameleon software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to speak a second language is a plus.
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work evenings and weekends when needed, and be flexible and willing to work beyond your regularly scheduled shift.

Benefits

This position has received a waiver from the Boston Residency Commission, establishing a temporary moratorium on the City of Boston Residency Ordinance for a period of three years, ending July 19, 2026.
