Job Responsibilities

The Custodian is responsible for executing assigned cleaning tasks specific to the job site. This includes general cleaning duties such as maintaining restrooms, offices, cafeterias, sales floors, and other designated areas. Responsibilities also encompass buffing, scrubbing, and performing basic cleaning tasks like vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping, as well as operating equipment such as scrubbers, extractors, and buffers.

Key Performance Expectations:
  • Execute all required cleaning tasks as directed by the Lead Custodian or Crew Lead Supervisor.
  • Safely operate floor machines for buffing, stripping, waxing, vacuuming, and carpet cleaning, adhering to the agreed-upon schedule.
  • Follow all safety guidelines, company policies, and management directives while performing tasks.
  • Maintain compliance with company protocols regarding safety, customer service, appropriate attire, and working conditions.
  • Complete assignments according to the established schedule and customer expectations.
  • Wear the designated uniform at required locations.
  • Conduct janitorial tasks based on the defined scope of work and customer requests, adhering to published schedules and guidelines. Typical tasks include:
    • Emptying wastebaskets and replacing liners as necessary.
    • Dusting and cleaning office furniture, desks, and tables.
    • Vacuuming all carpeted areas.
    • Spot cleaning soiled areas as needed.
    • Cleaning and sanitizing toilets, basins, and urinals.
    • Cleaning counters, mirrors, and fixtures.
    • Sweeping and damp mopping floors with disinfectant.
    • Spot cleaning walls, partitions, and doors.
    • Refilling restroom dispensers as needed.
    • Wiping and cleaning all table tops and chairs.
    • Cleaning vending machines and appliances.
    • Cleaning sinks and damp mopping tile floors.
  • Availability to work nights, early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Follow both oral and written instructions effectively.
  • Work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
  • Attend periodic training and safety meetings.
  • Ability to read and communicate in English.
  • Physical capability to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Engage in repetitive motions daily, including bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, reaching, climbing, and squatting.
  • Operate small power tools as necessary.
  • Capable of stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching in areas that may not be fully air-conditioned.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, including climbing and descending stairwells and ladders.
  • Function effectively in independent and high-pressure environments.
  • Maintain regular, consistent, and predictable attendance.
  • May require local area travel using a personal vehicle, approximately 10% of the time, varying throughout the month and week.
  • May need to enter customer facilities that require background screening.
Education and Qualifications:
A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred, along with 1–2 years of experience in custodial, janitorial, or cleaning services.

Required Skills:
  • Basic understanding of custodial duties and maintenance responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with cleaning equipment, including vacuums, brooms, mops, scrubbers, and floor finishers.
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques and processes.
  • Understanding of the properties and uses of various cleaning, disinfecting, stripping, and waxing agents.
  • Experience in cleaning and disinfecting restrooms.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety, adherence to safety standards, and reporting unsafe conditions to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Ability to follow instructions and comply with guidelines.
  • Proficient in reading and understanding measurement units on product labels.
  • Maintain personal appearance and hygiene in accordance with company standards.
  • Proven ability to keep cleaning equipment clean, safe, and operational.
Preferred Skills:
  • Ability to maintain cleaning supply closets in an organized manner.
